Football is back and it was an excellent opening week! Let’s look back at the week that was in the NFL. Here are 10 takeaways from Week 1.

The Perpetual Week 1 Stud

Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins balled out on Thursday night against Houston. Similar to the day he had in Week 1 of last season against Jacksonville. There’s at least one guy who didn’t start him on their fantasy team and is kicking himself for it.

The Elusive 300 in Buffalo

For the first time since Christmas Eve in 2016 when Tyrod Taylor did it, the Bills have a 300 yard passing game by a quarterback. Josh Allen eclipsed the mark with 312 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also added a touchdown on the ground in the victory over the New York Jets.

Not So Fast, J. Lo

Since the draft, rumors out of Green Bay were that Aaron Rodgers was done after the team traded up in the draft to get Jordan Love. But Sunday, Rodgers proved the need may want to pump the brakes on that idea. Rodgers threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns.

Cam Super in Foxborough Debut

Cam Newton made his Patriots debut on Sunday. He scored a pair of touchdown runs reminiscent of his days in Carolina. Another season, a new quarterback, and yet another Week 1 victory for Bill Belichick.

The Team Can Play D

The Washington Football Team in their first game under new coach Ron Rivera came to play, especially defensively. The defense sacked Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz eight times, including 1.5 for number two overall pick Chase Young, and intercepted him twice. They also held Philadelphia to a combined 57 rushing yards on their way to the win.

Motown Shocker for Mitchell

Mitchell Trubisky and the Chicago Bears trailed 23-6 after the third quarter. But the quarterback threw three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the come from behind victory over the Lions.

Hold That Trophy

Similar to last season when many experts were handing the Cleveland Browns the Super Bowl trophy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were this year’s version. But the New Orleans Saints defense had their own plans. Tom Brady‘s first game in pewter was one where he was out of sorts all game long.

Earning their Money

Recent big payday recipients Alvin Kamara, Dalvin Cook, and Christian McCaffrey all scored a pair of touchdowns in Week 1. While DeAndre Hopkins didn’t score a touchdown, he set a career-high in catches with 14.

So Close Rook

Number one overall pick Joe Burrow made his long awaited debut. He tallied 193 yards passing, and he ran in from 23 yards out for his first NFL touchdown. But the Los Angeles Chargers scored 10 unanswered fourth quarter points to keep the rookie from notching his first career win. He becomes the 13th straight quarterback drafted number one overall to lose his first NFL start. David Carr in 2002 with the Houston Texans was the last to be victorious in his first start. A.J. Green was flagged for a push off on a potential go ahead score late in the game.

Throwing a Punch Still Leads to an Ejection

Titans’ linebacker Rashaan Evans threw a punch in an early game scrum with Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt. The referees and the Monday Night Football team missed it. Unfortunately for Evans, the league office didn’t.
