The third ranked prospect in the Astros organization, Yordan Alvarez, was called up the to majors on Sunday.
Houston acquired the soon-to-be 22-year-old in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016 for Josh Fields; and although he is behind prospects Kyle Tucker and Forest Whitley, he is proving to be lightning in a bottle.
Injuries have been quite literally crippling the Astros lineup, thus thrusting the power-hitting Alvarez at designated hitter.
Alvarez has proven to be quite the prospect this season. In 56 minor league games, he has crushed 23 homers and possessed a very compelling .343 batting average.
The rookie began his debut game as the five-hitter in a deep Astros lineup. After being retired in his first at-bat, he came up with one on and one out in the fourth inning.
Alvarez hammered one into the left-center field balcony, becoming just the seventh player to homer in his MLB debut in Astros history.
Then, in his second game, Alvarez steps up in the bottom of the fifth and homers on a line drive to right field. Bringing teammate Yuli Gurriel home as well, making the score 8-5.
Astros have been pretty hot, winning nine of their last 10. Can Alvarez be the spark to keep them going? Will he prove he can stay when the big guys get back? He will definitely get his opportunity, so only time will tell.
