The XFL canceled the rest of the 2020 season on Friday due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The league had suspended the season on March 12 because of the pandemic, following the lead of all other major sports. XFL players were still being paid, even though games weren’t being played.
The XFL plans to resume play next year.
“The COVID-19 pandemic, and the most recent local and state regulations, have left the XFL no choice but to officially cancel the remainder of the 2020 season,” XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck said in a statement. “This decision has been made with the health and safety of the entire XFL family as our top priority. We’re grateful for the incredible response,” the letter read, “and look forward to playing a full season for you — and with you — in 2021 and beyond.”
NFL teams will be allowed to sign XFL players starting on Monday at 9 a.m. EST, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. XFL players can also sign with a CFL team. Players who want to sign with an NFL or CFL team will be released from their XFL contract.
The XFL had played five of its 10-game schedule. The Houston Roughnecks were the top team with a 5-0 record.
