Winston Extension Would “Surprise” Former Buccaneers GM Dominik

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik had some choice words regarding quarterback Jameis Winston’s future with the team when he spoke with PewterReport.com’s Scott Reynolds at the 2020 Senior Bowl:

“I would be surprised if they pay him. Maybe they will. It’s their decision, but I would be shocked if the Bucs franchised Winston – or transitioned him. I think the decision they have is certainly difficult because there has been some production there, but I don’t know how you could justify paying Jameis Winston more money this year than he made last year.”

Dominik served in various roles in Tampa Bay from 1995 to 2013, including serving as the team’s general manager from 2009 to 2013. The former executive believes Winston’s turnovers have severely harmed his market value:

“You have 30-plus touchdowns, but you also have 30 interceptions,” Dominik said. “I don’t think that the market is there for that. If I’m Jameis’ camp, I would just be thankful to receive an offer from the Bucs around $20 – $22 million for one year. That would be intriguing on a one-year deal to see if he can get (the turnovers) fixed.”

Winston is currently set to become a free agent at the beginning of the 2020 NFL league year on March 18, 2020. Current general manager Jason Licht and head coach Bruce Arians have until then to work out an extension or apply the franchise tag to the beleaguered quarterback.
