Who are the Biggest Clubs in the Scottish Premiership?

Scottish Premiership

When it comes to the Scottish Premiership, two clubs often instantly spring to mind. While these two outfits do tend to dominate proceedings, most notably sharing every league title between them since 1985, the nation’s top-flight is far from a two-horse race.

The ongoing trend of the Big Two’s supremacy in the Scottish Premiership betting is unlikely to be bucked anytime soon, but it’s still worth taking a look at some of the division’s biggest clubs as we reach the halfway point of the 2024-25 campaign.

Rangers

The most successful team in Scottish Premiership history, Rangers have won the league title a resounding 55 times—which is a record for the most league titles won by any club in the world.

The Gers famously won nine league titles consecutively between 1989 and 1997, with icons like Brian Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, and Ally McCoist donning the famous red, white, and blue in that era.

Rangers went through financial turmoil in 2012 and were relegated to the fourth tier of Scottish football.

They ultimately built their way back to the top flight and won their 55th title unbeaten under the guidance of Steven Gerrard in 2021—stopping Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid at the final hurdle.

Celtic

Rapidly closing the gap on Rangers, Celtic will almost certainly join their Old Firm rivals on 55 titles come the end of the season as they are the overwhelming favourites for the trophy in football betting markets.

The Hoops were able to close in on their cross-city foes during Rangers’ hardships over the last 12 years, and the fact that Brendan Rodgers’ men are hurtling toward their record will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Gers.

Celtic are also the only Scottish side to have won the European Cup (Champions League), with their iconic side led by Jock Stein beating Italian giants Inter Milan 2-1 at Estadio Nacional in 1967 and dubbed the ‘Lisbon Lions.’

Aberdeen

The last side outside of Celtic and Rangers to win the Scottish Premiership, Aberdeen enjoyed a successful period in the 1980s.

The Dons won three of their four league titles between 1979 and 1985, with their Golden Era fronted by none other than legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Catching the attention of Manchester United, where he set various records and dominated English football for over 30 years, ‘Fergie’ also won four Scottish Cups, a Scottish League Cup, and a European Cup Winners’ Cup at Pittodrie.

Heart of Midlothian & Hibernian

Edinburgh’s big sides, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian, have long histories dating back to the 1870s and endure a fierce rivalry that splits the Scottish capital.

Hearts were formed one year before their city foes in 1874 and have been crowned champions on four occasions. They have also won the Scottish Cup eight times and the Scottish League Cup four times.

Across the capital at Easter Road, Hibs have also won the top tier on four occasions and the domestic cups three times apiece.
