Week two in the NFL was a bad one for injuries, as two star quarterbacks went down with long term injuries. In this article, I will describe their injuries and talk about how it will affect their respective teams.
Drew Brees (Out 6-8 Weeks)
The New Orleans Saints quarterback went down a UCL injury to his throwing hand’s thumb after he jammed it on Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald‘s hand when he was attempting to sack Brees. Brees will be out six to eight weeks with this injury, and in his place will be Teddy Bridgewater, the former Minnesota Viking who tore his ACL and lost his starting job because of it. This will certainly be an opportunity for Bridgewater to prove himself, and possibly advertise himself as the Saints future starting quarterback when Brees decides to hang his cleats up.
Once Brees is ready and able to come back from his UCL injury, it may not be his starting job to be had anymore, especially if Bridgewater exceeds his preset expectations. The Saints are currently 1-1 and have games against the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming up in the not too distant future. This injury will provide a stout test to the Saints, and will surely put to test the leadership of their team and the resolve of the defense.
Ben Roethlisberger (Season Ending)
Big Ben’s injury was an odd injury, all week in practice he was bothered by elbow inflammation in his throwing arm. Against the Seattle Seahawks, his injury came to a head where he was forced to leave the game with extreme elbow soreness and inflammation, thus putting his backup, Mason Rudolph, into the game. The second-year quarterback nearly led his team to victory, only losing by two points. After the game, Roethlisberger went to get a specialist’s opinion, and they advised him to have season-ending elbow surgery.
Now the team is Rudolph’s hands, and he will surely be tested with games against the San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens in the not too distant future. The Steelers are 0-2, so they will need to snap out of their slump and go on a trailblazing streak if they wish to qualify for the playoffs.
Concluding Thoughts
In conclusion, the Saints and Steelers will need to put their game faces on and fight through adversity if they wish to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive for this season.
Hope you all enjoyed!
