The New York Jets stocked up on intriguing rookies in this past year’s draft and one of the players who hasn’t made his debut yet is Denzel Mims. Mims, 23, stands at 6-foot-3 inches, and 207 pounds. A fabulous size for a receiver who can play from the slot and run deep routes.
Who is Mims?
The Jets selected the former Baylor star with the 59th pick of the draft after general manager Joe Douglas traded back with the Seattle Seahawks in order to obtain an extra third-round pick which led to more picks later on.
Mims was a star at Baylor and as a senior last season, he had 66 catches for 1,020 receiving yards while scoring 12 touchdowns. The Jets have lacked a true receiving option outside of Jamison Crowder this season. Breshad Perriman has been hurt and limited, Chris Hogan is on the Injured Reserve, and Braxton Berrios and Jeff Smith can’t carry the team. Mims will look to bring the Jets a deep threat and some physicality to help boost the Jets offense.
Mims has been missing in action all season. In the first practice, he injured a hamstring. As things were trending upwards for him nearing the season, he injured his other hamstring and the Jets have been cautious with his rehabilitation process.
High Praise
In a presser on Thursday, Jets Head Coach Adam Gase praised Mims: “He’s got incredible length, range, he can go up and get the ball, speed. He has all those traits that you’re looking for in a guy that can be a really good receiver.” If the Jets can get a half effort from Mims on Sunday, that would already be a huge boost. Another factor is that the Jets receivers have been overworked due to the lack of depth. Now that the Jets have the potential to have Crowder, Mims, and Perriman all active, that will relieve the workload of the rest of the team. The quarterbacks have also been struggling with the lack of top receivers. Now either Joe Flacco or Sam Darnold will not have to stress as much as they have healthy talent on the roster.
Top-Notch Blocking
Another intangible that Mims will bring is his blocking ability. Mims can help block for the running backs and other receivers without the Jets having to waste a Trevon Wesco lets say. Teams will align coverage differently when Mims is going out versus Wesco which leaves other receivers more open. Mims also will allow the Jets to use other receivers more lightly. He will also demand more coverage on him leaving some other receivers like Berrios more open, leading to bigger plays.

Any way you cut it, the Jets will be much better equipped with Mims now active. Darnold may finally have a receiver that he can get comfortable with and thrive with. There may be some very pleasant sights on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
