Weider’s Bracketology: Thoughts on the Latest CFB Playoff Rankings

NCAA CFB Playoff - College Football - Oregon WR Traeshon Holden

We have three weeks left in the college football regular season before conference championship games begin. We are officially winding down in the first year of the 12-team playoffs.

Below are my thoughts on the second playoff rankings that came out on Wednesday.

Top 4 Teams

These teams earn first-round byes.

1. Oregon
2. Texas
3. BYU
4. Miami

Weider’s Notes

  • The Big Ten Championship winner between Ohio State and Oregon will most likely determine the top spot.
  • The SEC is a jumbled mess. For now, Texas earns the top spot in the SEC. However, there are many top games left to decide who will win the league.
  • BYU is the favorite to win the Big 12, but Colorado is fast-charging and playing well.
  • Miami lost to Georgia Tech, but if they win out and win the ACC, they will make it as a top-four seed.

Seeds 8 and 9

Winner of #8 vs. #9 plays #1 (Oregon)

8. Tennessee

9. Notre Dame

  • This game would be amazing. Notre Dame at Tennessee. Rocky Top playing. Wow, I would love to see this game.
  • Tennessee plays Georgia this week, so they might lose and tumble down the rankings.

Seeds 5 and 12

Winner of #5 vs. #12 plays #4 (Miami)

5. Ohio State

12. Boise State

  • Ohio State is No. 2 in the rankings, but the second-ranked Big Ten team. As a result, they fall to the fifth seed.
  • Boise State looks like the favorite to get the Group of 5 spot.

Seeds 6 and 11

Winner of #6 vs. #11 plays #3 (BYU)

6. Penn State

11. Ole Miss

  • This is another amazing game. Bring Ole Miss up and play in State College, Penn. The atmosphere would be crazy. Maybe Penn State could get another whiteout game. Just a thought.
  • Both teams should win out and have a good chance of making the playoff.

Seeds 7 and 10

Winner of #7 vs. #10 plays #2 (Texas)

7. Indiana

10. Alabama

  • Indiana hosting Alabama for a playoff game would bring crazy energy and excitement.
  • Both teams look like decent shots to make the playoff.
