Top 4 Seeds

These teams earn bye weeks.

4. Utah

Weider’s notes:

  • The top four conference winners get a bye for the first week of the playoffs.
  • I would be shocked if the Big Ten or the SEC didn’t get the top seed. Those are the best two conferences.
  • Ohio State, Georgia, Miami, and Utah seem like the favorites to win the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12, respectively.

Seeds 8 and 9

Winner of #8 vs. #9 plays #1 (Ohio State)

8. Tennessee
9. Penn State

Weider’s notes:

  • Tennessee looks outstanding through four weeks. They had an impressive road win at Oklahoma on Saturday.
  • Penn State is a good program but has not gotten over the hump yet, nor have they won enough big games.

Seeds 5 and 12

Winner of #5 vs. #12 plays #4 (Utah)

5. Texas
12. Boise State

Weider’s notes:

  • Texas looks like one of the best teams in college football but plays in the rugged SEC.
  • A Group of 5 team will make the 12-team playoff. Some of the programs in the running are UNLV, Boise, Memphis, and SMU.

Seeds 7 and 10

Winner of #7 vs. #10 plays #2 (Georgia)

7. Oregon
10. Notre Dame

Weider’s notes:

  • Oregon looks good and will face the Buckeyes in a few weeks, but they should have a good chance to make the playoff win or lose.
  • Notre Dame is a wild card of a team. They lost to NIU but still can win out and go 11-1. Then, they have a good chance to make the playoff.

Seeds 6 and 10

Winner of #6 vs. #10 plays #3 (Miami)

6. Alabama
10. Ole Miss

Weider’s notes:

  • Alabama, in the first season of the post-Nick Saban era, looks like a good team and should make the playoff. They get a huge test next week against Georgia.
  • Ole Miss looks like a talented team this season but has not had a true test yet. They should have a decent chance of making the playoff.
