The New York Jets and New England Patriots were expected to play a competitive game on PrimeTime Monday night, just not at the score that they did. The Jets were coming off a beating by the Kansas City Chiefs and the Patriots were coming off a nail biter defeat against the rival Buffalo Bills. Both teams had streaks on the line they wanted to break but only one could break it. The Patriots were trying to avoid losing five straight and the Jets were just trying to win their first game of the season.
The Game
The Jets started the game with a thump. They gave a hearty dose to 37-year-old Frank Gore, giving the Hall of Famer seven touches on the first 15 plays. Denzel Mims made a big catch for 26-yards in the first drive of the game of what would be a big game for the rookie. The Jets settled for a Sergio Castillo field goal in the opening drive. The Patriots answered back with a steady dose of Damien Harris And a very nice play by Damiere Byrd and a beautiful pass from Cam Newton to Jakobi Meyers for 33 yards. Cam ran the ball in for a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead. The rest of the first quarter was fairly uneventful but Mekhi Becton, the Jets star rookie left-tackle did leave with around two minutes left in the first quarter with a chest injury.
To start the second quarter Joe Flacco unleashed an absolute bomb to Breshad Perriman for a 50-yard touchdown. The Jets extended that lead after on with a field goal by rookie kicker Castillo. ThePatriots scored another field goal to take a jab at the Jets lead. That wasn’t before rookie safety Ashtyn Davis rocked Newton from the backfield for a sack that was tacked back because of a penalty. Davis had and continued to play a very impressive game. The Jets continue to pad their lead later on after a great drive including passes for 15 yards to Mims and 19 yards to Perriman before Flacco unloaded another long shot to Jamison Crowder for a 20-yard touchdown to take a 20-10 lead at the half.
On the first drive of the second half, the Patriots pounded away with a steady dose of Rex Burkhead and Newton to his receivers to result in a rushing touchdown by Burkhead. The Jets answered with another touchdown, this time to Perriman again for 15-yards. The Patriots then shot up a field goal to cut the lead again to 27-20. Flacco immediately allowed an interception to J.C. Jackson who played a great game against the rookie Mims. Newton led another great drive mixing it up against the Jets defense resulting in a quart back rushing touchdown to tie the game with around two minutes left. The Jets then went three-and-out to set the Patriots up for a field goal to win the game.
Intangibles
There were many intangibles in the game that the stat sheet doesn’t show. This included lineman Foley Fatukasi who has played impressively in the opportunities he’s been given.

The rookie safety Davis also played an amazing game, practically sacking Newton not once but TWICE.

Stats
Statistically, Newton had a fairly rejuvenating game, going 27-35 with two rushing touchdowns and 274 passing yards. Myers had a great game catching 12 balls for 169 yards. Before leaving, Harris rushed for 71 yards on 14 rushes. On defense, defensive end Deatrich Wise had a sack and Jackson had an interception.
The Jets put up an equally great stat line, with Flacco throwing for 262 yards while going 18 for 25 with three touchdowns. Gore rushed 12 times for 46 yards, and Perriman caught five balls for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Crowder had the other touchdown while catching to balls for 26 yards. Mims had a great game, catching the ball four times for 62 yards.

The Jets will walk into their bye week with an 0-9 record looking for some change. Whether that equates to a new set of personnel on the sideline or some cuts, something has got to give. The Patriots will get a date with Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football. The Patriot and Jets will meet again in the final game of the season.
