The Jacksonville Jaguars were close to an upset over the Texans but fell just short. Houston won by a score of 27-25 in a high-powered offensive battle. The Jaguars lose their seventh-straight game, albeit there were some very impressive plays from Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jake Luton‘s debut had some ups and downs. He completed a long touchdown pass to D.J. Chark on the opening drive, and that was his lone touchdown of the game. Luton had a costly interception where Luton overthrew his intended receiver, but there were plenty of plays where he flashed. He kept Jacksonville in the game on the Jaguars’ final drive of the game, where he spun into the endzone for a rushing touchdown. Chark had a great game catching seven passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Chris Conley also recorded seven catches for 52 yards. James Robinson continued his excellent season and had the most carries of the season as he had 25 carries for 99 yards and a score. The offensive line didn’t help Luton out as he was under duress for most of the game.
Jacksonville’s defense continues to be a big problem. They allowed over 100 rushing yards, even with David Johnson going out with a concussion early in the game. Deshaun Watson cruised for 50 rushing yards to keep up with his 281 and two touchdowns through the air. Will Fuller and Brandin Cooks both caught long touchdown passes. The Fuller touchdown shouldn’t have happened as the play clock had run out before the ball was snapped, but the referees didn’t see it, and Fuller burned the defense. Myles Jack had 11 tackles, which led the team, as well as a tackle for loss. Tre Herndon had a sack on Watson, and Joe Schobert and Myles Jack split the other one.
Houston Texans
The Texans made the Dolphins draft pick a bit less of luxury this week with their win. Watson made easy work of Jacksonville’s defense. Duke Johnson had 20 touches in relief of David Johnson, and he had 73 yards and a rushing score. Duke Johnson also lost a fumble that was recovered by DaVon Hamilton.
Defensively, the Texans continued to struggle. Luton had a field day in his first career start. J.J. Watt made life difficult on Luton, but the secondary is a massive concern. Vernon Hargreaves corralled Luton’s interception, and Zach Cunningham collected a second sack on Luton. Tyrell Adams led Houston in tackles with 12.
Highlights
The Jaguars have now been losers of seven-straight and get the Packers next week, who will be returning Allen Lazard and David Bakhtiari to their lineup. Then they will play both Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Houston finally gets their second victory of the season and will face Cleveland next week as they hope to rain on Miami’s parade of earning a top-five draft pick.
