Week 7 Recap: Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Jacksonville Jaguars Los Angeles Chargers

The Jacksonville Jaguars traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7. The Chargers jumped out to an early lead, but 21 unanswered points from the Jaguars turned the game into a shootout. Despite a go-ahead touchdown by the Jaguars in the second half, Justin Herbert took over late and the Chargers won the game 39-29.

Herbert threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns while adding 66 yards and a touchdown on the ground. On the other side, James Robinson dominated the ground, running for 119 yards and a touchdown while adding another 20 yards and a receiving touchdown through the air.

First Half

Los Angeles started the game on fire. They shut down the Jaguars offense on four consecutive drives and jumped out to a 16-0 lead. Michael Badgley connected on a 35-yard field goal. Rookie wide receiver Joe Reed rushed for a seven-yard touchdown and Herbert found tight end Donald Parham Jr for a 22-yard score.

The Jaguars would not go away. Robinson led a quick drive that ended in him rushing for both the touchdown and the two-point conversion. Right before half time, Robinson found the endzone again, cutting the Chargers’ lead to two. After a wild first half, the two teams went into the locker room with a halftime score of 16-14 in favor of the Chargers.

Second Half

Jacksonville drew the first blood of the second half. Early in the third quarter, Jaguars’ special teamer Daniel Thomas scooped up a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown to give them a 21-16 lead. Herbert would quickly lead the Chargers down the field and regain the lead on a 26-yard strike to tight end Virgil Green.

The Jaguars responded with a Chris Conley touchdown catch, retaking the lead 29-22. From that point on it was all Herbert.

He threw a bomb downfield to Jalen Guyton for a 70-yard touchdown to tie the game. After a quick fumble by the Jaguars, Herbert ran it in himself to give the Chargers a seven-point lead. A Badgley field goal late in the quarter would ice the ball game and give the Chargers a 39-29 victory.

Highlights

The Jaguars dropped to 1-6 entering their bye week. They will need to evaluate whether Gardner Minshew will continue to start at quarterback after struggling the past several weeks. Meanwhile, the Chargers advance to 2-4 and Herbert will look to continue his hot streak against the Denver Broncos next week in a pivotal division game.
