Week 7 NFL Injury Update

Dr. Beth Sullivan | October 20th, 2019

Week seven started out with a bang on Thursday night when Patrick Mahomes was knocked out with a dislocated patella. There are other injuries to check on before the main slate of games kicks off later this afternoon.

Josh Gordon  WR New England Patriots and Alvin Kamara RB  New Orleans Saints

Both Gordon and Kamara are dealing with knee and ankle injuries and both have been ruled out for their respective week seven games. Gordon suffered a knee strain in week six on top of an ankle sprain and Kamara suffered a high ankle sprain on top of his already strained knee injury. Based on the video of Gordon’s injury I suspect a grade 1 strain which has a one-two week timetable for recovery. Kamara’s high ankle sprain has the longer recovery time since even a grade 1 sprain has a two to four week full recovery time table while a grade 2 sprain is a six to eight week recovery period.

Todd Gurley  RB  Los Angeles Rams

Gurley was not on the Friday injury report and looks to be an active participant literally and figuratively in the Rams game plan for week seven. He participated in practice all week without further incident. How effective he will be coming off the quad injury remains to be seen, however, if he is fully recovered, he should be a full go.

Mitchell Trubisky  QB  Chicago Bears

Trubisky was injured on September 29th when he fell on his non-throwing shoulder and suffered a shoulder dislocation. He is set to start today after practicing all week without difficulty. Trubisky will wear a brace on the shoulder to help stabilize it and while there is a risk of redislocation, the brace will help to lessen that risk to some degree. The brace should not hamper his throwing mechanics since the brace will be on the non-throwing shoulder.

Saquon Barkley  RB  New York Giants

Barkley suffered a high ankle sprain in week 3 and has been out of the lineup since then. He participated fully in practice this week and looks to return to the playing field today. This is in the normal recovery timeframe for a grade 1 high ankle sprain which I explained previously is two to four weeks. If the sprain is not fully healed, there is a risk of further injury, but since he participated fully all week without difficulty we can assume he is fully healed.
