A quarter of the NFL season is in the books, and yet, there are still four teams that currently have yet to taste victory. Which ones have the best chance of ending their winless streak? Who is potentially doomed to a 0-16 season? Find out for yourself right here in the Week 5 edition of the winless power rankings.
1. Houston Texans
After six years, Bill O’Brien is out as coach and general manager. With 73-year-old Romeo Crennel taking the helm, the Texans should be vitalized headed into their Week 5 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In fact, even with a winless record, Houston is favored by 6.5 points headed into Sunday’s matchup. And why shouldn’t they be? Even with his lackluster receiving core, Deshaun Watson is still having a very good year. He is passing for 1,092 yards with six touchdowns to just three interceptions. Crennel has said that he believes the team can get back in the playoff hunt. But to do that, they will need to improve their rushing attack. Averaging 73 yards per game, the 32nd-ranked Texans will need David Johnson to gain a few more yards if they want to be competitive.
2. New York Giants
So far, the Giants have met most expectations put on them at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, those expectations were not very high. A big point of concern is the play of quarterback Daniel Jones. The second-year player out of Duke has not thrown a touchdown since September 21st, and with two passing touchdowns to five interceptions, he will need to improve if the Giants are to win any games and if he’s able to keep his starting job. It is unlikely New York can pick up their first win on Sunday, as they face a Dallas Cowboys team which, while not very good record-wise, still has a quarterback in Dak Prescott who has thrown for over 1,600 yards to this point. The Giants will have a better chance in Week 6 against the Washington Football Team.
3. Atlanta Falcons
Oh, the Falcons. Last week, Atlanta subscribed to the “you can’t blow a lead if you don’t have one” philosophy, and it worked. Thus, their defense gave up 30 points, and they were soundly defeated by the Green Bay Packers 16-30 on Monday Night Football. So, what next for the team? Their playoff chances look slim to none in a competitive NFC, and on top of that, a growing number of Falcons fans are calling for coach Dan Quinn’s head and with a minus eight average point differential, it’s easy to see why. It doesn’t seem likely that Atlanta will win on Sunday, either, as they face a surprising Carolina Panthers team, which is riding a two-game winning streak. Fortunately for Falcons fans, they face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6 and the Detroit Lions in Week 7, two teams currently sitting at 1-3. Hopefully, they can score a win there.
4. New York Jets
Times are tough as a New York sports fan. As the Jets continually fail to produce, the no. 1 overall draft pick seems more and more likely, and the team is drifting dangerously close to an 0-16 record. The shouts for coach Adam Gase’s job are becoming more and more fervent and topping it all off, the Jets are seven-point underdogs, at home, no less, against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. While an eventual 0-16 season seems unlikely, it is not out of the realm of possibility, and it will be something to keep an eye on as the season goes along.
