The San Francisco 49ers traveled to MetLife Stadium for the second week in a row, this time to face the New York Giants. Despite suffering an extraordinary amount of injuries, the 49ers clinched their second consecutive road game. The Giants entered the game winless and hoped to turn the page on the season in Week 3, however, they were only able to put three field goals on the board and lost their third straight game.
The First Half
San Francisco started the game with possession of the ball and ended the first drive with a 52-yard field goal by Robbie Gould. New York started the game off on the wrong foot when Daniel Jones fumbled the ball and Dion Jordan recovered it, turning possession over to the 49ers.
The 49ers capitalized on the turnover with another field goal, this time from 32 yards out, and extended the lead by three more, 6-0 with one minute left in the first quarter.
The Giants held on to possession of the ball to begin the second quarter and put their first points up when Graham Gano kicked a 52-yard field goal, closing the lead to three, 6-3.
The 49ers were unable to convert their opening drive of the second quarter into any points and Gould missed a field goal from 55 yards out when he kicked it wide right.
The Giants tied the game up in their next possession when Gano put another field goal up, this time from 42 yards out.
San Francisco answered in their next drive when after six minutes of play Jerick McKinnon rushed the ball ten yards for a touchdown and took back the lead, 13-6 with just over one minute left in the first half.
The Giants turned the ball over again in their next possession, two times actually, but the first interception was reversed upon review. San Francisco capitalized on the turnover with another field goal kick from 26 yards out and they were on top, 16-6 going into halftime.
The Second Half
New York started the second half of the game with possession of the ball and finished the opening drive with Gano’s third and final field goal of the game. This time he kicked it from 47 yards out and closed the lead to a one-touchdown score, 16-9. This was the last time the Giants put any points on the board.
The 49ers produced a touchdown in their opening drive after Brandon Aiyuk rushed the ball for the 19-yard score and extended the lead to 23-9 with just over three minutes left to play in the third quarter.
San Francisco scored another touchdown in their next possession when Nick Mullens connected with Jeff Wilson Jr. for the 19-yard pass.
The 49ers finished the third quarter and started the fourth quarter with possession of the ball, and in the opening drive of the fourth quarter, Mullens connected with Jeff Wilson Jr for another 19-yard touchdown score. They attempted the two-point conversion instead of the extra point, but it was a failed attempt and the 49ers led the Giants by 20 points.
In the next San Francisco possession the 49ers put another touchdown on the board, their third in a row, and Wilson’s second touchdown of the game.
San Francisco ran eight minutes off the clock in this drive and widened the gap to 36-9 with three and a half minutes left on the clock. The Giants turned over the ball a final time in their next possession which essentially ended the game.
