Week 3 Preview: Tennessee Titans vs. Minnesota Vikings

Derrick Henry

The 2-0 Tennessee Titans travel to Minneapolis to take on the 0-2 Minnesota Vikings. The Titans come off a shootout victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Nashville in Week 2 while the Vikings come off a defeat at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts. The Vikings lead the all-time series 9-4, including six of the last seven meetings.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill had four touchdown passes in last week’s win. Tannehill has 11 games where he’s thrown at least a pair of touchdown passes dating back to last season. Viking’s signal caller Kirk Cousins has just 372 passing yards and two touchdown passes through the first two games. Cousins is continuing to adjust to life without Stefon Diggs, who is now in Buffalo.

Derrick Henry, the reigning rushing champion, is second in the NFL in rushing yards. He trails Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Jones by just 34 yards. Dalvin Cook has totaled 113 rushing yards this season. The Titans’ tight end, Jonnu Smith, will be looking for his third straight game with a touchdown. Smith leads all AFC tight ends with three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Vikings’ wide receiver, Adam Thielen, in his first season as the team’s number one receiver, has six touchdowns in his last five games at home.

Defensively, both teams have had their struggles, as both units continue to get with all of their shiny new parts, without having the benefit of the preseason or a traditional training camp. The Titans defense has been fortunate to have been able to get the one crucial stop when the team has needed it most. While the Vikings defense has had to contend with Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers in their first two games.

Tannehill hopes to have A.J. Brown back among his offensive weapons this week, though it doesn’t appear likely at this point. Vic Beasley, the team’s biggest free agent signing not named Jadeveon Clowney, could finally make his long awaited debut in two tone blue. Meanwhile, the Vikings have the benefit of Yannick Ngakoue, who is familiar with the Titans offense. He is a former Jacksonville Jaguar and has seen the likes of Tannehill and Henry twice a season. His knowledge of just that will help in practice this week.

Prediction

The Titans offensively have continued the consistency that they had last season while the Vikings have had issues putting together a complete team effort together this far this seasonThe Titans defensively will study what the Colts defense was able to do in limiting the Vikings to just 11 points. Henry will eclipse the 100 yard rushing mark for the first time this season.
