The San Francisco 49ers traveled to the East Coast this week to face the New York Jets at the MetLife Stadium. Both teams entered Week 2 winless and the 49ers started the game with several key players out with injuries. It didn’t get any better for the 49ers. At least four players were injured during the game and did not return to play. The Jets were unable to take advantage of the battered 49ers roster and San Francisco kept the Jets at bay with the 31-13 victory.
The First Half
San Francisco opened the game with possession of the ball and Raheem Mostert took it all the way to the endzone for an 80-yard touchdown run, putting the 49ers on the board first, 7-0 with 14:43 on the clock.
The Jets were unable to convert their first possession into any points. The teams traded downs for the next several plays. However, they weren’t uneventful possessions as the banged-up 49ers suffered even more injuries in the next two possessions.
In the 49ers second possession Jimmy Garoppolo was sacked by Quinnen Williams and was injured. In the Jets following possession, Nick Bosa was injured and taken off the field on a medical cart as was Solomon Thomas. It was determined in the second quarter they would not return to the game. The Jets closed out this possession with a 41-yard field goal kick by Sam Ficken, closing the lead to 7-3.

Mostert again took the ball to the endzone in the next possession, this time for 67 yards, but the touchdown was nullified due to an offensive holding call on Mike McGlinchey. The first quarter ended during this possession and the 49ers put the first points of the second quarter on the board when Garoppolo connected with Jordan Reed for the 18-yard touchdown. With just under ten minutes left in the first half, the score was 14-3.
The Jets were unable to convert their first possession into any points after 11 plays and taking six minutes off of the clock, and 49ers finished out the quarter with possession of the ball. In the 13th play of the possession Garappolo again connected with Reid who took it for a four-yard touchdown, which closed out the first half of the game 21-3.
The Second Half
The Jets opened the second half of the game with a three and out and Nick Mullens was brought in as the 49ers quarterback, and Garoppolo ruled out for the rest of the game, as was Mostert with a knee injury. Mullens threw an incomplete pass and was sacked in his first two plays. The 49ers finished out their first possession with a 46-yard field goal by Robbie Gould, extending the lead to 24-3.

The Jets were unable to convert their next possession into any points either, but in the following 49ers possession, Pierre Desir intercepted a Mullens pass intended for Jerick McKinnon and regained possession of the ball. After failing to score on 3rd and goal, Ficken put up another field goal from the 25-yard line. That made the score 24-6 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter; which is how the third quarter would end.
New York opened the final quarter with possession of the ball and were unable to put any points up, going three and out. San Francisco converted their first possession of the fourth quarter into an 18-yard touchdown by McKinnon. The next score didn’t come until there was only 1:23 left on the clock and the Jets finally put a touchdown up when Sam Darnold connected with Braxton Berrios for a deep 30-yard touchdown pass. That finished the game and the 49ers will go into next week 1-1, while the Jets will enter Week 3, 0-2.

Next week the 49ers will play at MetLife Stadium again when they meet the New York Giants. The Jets will head to Indianapolis to face the Colts.
