The Kansas City Chiefs traveled to SoFi Stadium for the first time to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in a divisional battle in Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season. In a game where the Chiefs were expected to dominate, the Chargers shocked the league and controlled most of the game, but would ultimately fall to the Chiefs in overtime, 23-20.
In warmups, Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor came down with a chest injury, leaving No. 6 overall pick Justin Herbert to make his first career start. He started the game with a 79-yard drive before recording his first career rushing touchdown, giving the Chargers a quick 7-0 lead, which they would carry into the second quarter.

The Chiefs trailed 17-6 in the third quarter before Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker nailed a 58-yard field goal, tying the Chiefs’ record for the longest field goal in franchise history, cutting the lead to one possession entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes took over and tied the game with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs were able to convert the two-point conversion.

The Chargers would tack on a field goal late in the game after a drive that lasted over nine minutes, leaving Mahomes and the Chiefs with 2:27 to tie the game or take the lead. Mahomes would lead the Chiefs down the field before scrambling for a key 21-yard rush on third down to give the Chiefs a huge first down. Butker would go on to hit his second field goal of the day and take the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Chiefs forced a quick punt, giving them a chance to win the game with a field goal. The Chiefs drove down the field and converted on fourth down to get into field goal range for Harrison Butker. After a false start and subsequent Chargers timeout to ice him, Butker hit his second 58-yard field goal of the day to clinch the win for the Chiefs. The game-winning field goal from Butker is the second-longest kick in overtime history to win a game.

Despite a sloppy and poor performance from the Chiefs, they came away with the win. Next week, they travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens on Monday Night Football.
