Week 2 Recap: Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers

Aaron Jones

After blowing a lead to the Chicago Bears in Week 1, the Detroit Lions wanted to get off to a hot start against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. With Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark out, the Lions ran the ball early and often which led to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. Rodgers and the Packers offense responded with 31 unanswered points on their way to another dominating performance.

Rodgers and Matt LeFleur have quickly silenced any doubts that a repeat of their inaugural 13-3 season was possible. The green and gold put up 42 points in a 42-21 victory over Detroit on Sunday. There were worries after the Lions jumped out to a quick lead backed by a touchdown run from Kerryon Johnson and a touchdown reception from veteran receiver Marvin Jones Jr. Ultimately, the Lions continued their losing streak dating back to October 27, 2019, and blew their second double-digit lead of the season.

The star of the day for Green Bay was running back Aaron Jones. The young running back totaled 236 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. Coming into the game the Lions wanted to utilize the run game with the Packers lacking interior line depth, but the Packers stole their thunder. Jones had a nice day receiving as well, with 68 receiving yards, an impressive catch down the sideline, and a touchdown catch to give Green Bay their first score of the day.

Highlights:

Jones decided to blow the game open in the second half with a long 75-yard run.

Not to be outdone, Chandon Sullivan benefited from the Rashan Gary pass rush and took the Matthew Stafford pass for a quick score.

Stafford hit Marvin Hall in the back of the end zone with a rocket on the run to keep the game interesting in the fourth quarter.

Coming into the season with a promising offense and a top pick in Jeff Okudah, the Lions were poised to make a run at a possible wild card spot in the expanded NFL playoffs. After starting 0-2, the Lions will have a rough path to recovery which begins in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals who are led by the emerging star, Kyler Murray. Look for Stafford to be more active and aggressive to try and accommodate space for a late-game meltdown.

Green Bay will roll into Week 3 with the top offense in the NFL and a defense that has proven capable of using their dynamic playmakers to put Rodgers and the offense in position to add quick points in key spots. Although there are injury concerns with Davante Adams being limited in the contest and Clark recovering from a groin injury, the matchup between Rodgers and Drew Brees will be as iconic as ever.
