On Sunday afternoon the San Francisco 49ers will travel across the country to meet the New York Jets in Week 2 action. Both teams are rebounding from a loss in the first week of regular season play and will be hungry for the win this week. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 10-3 and have won the last two of three games. The last time the two teams met at Metlife Stadium the 49ers shutout the Jets, 34-0. In this matchup, the 49ers will have to overcome a mostly injured offensive line and the Jets will have to step up the game on both sides of the ball to secure the victory.
San Francisco 49ers
Last week the 49ers opened the season at home against the Arizona Cardinals and in addition to the injured offensive line, the defense was unable to stop Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins, losing 24-20.
This week doesn’t look a whole lot better injury-wise, as Richard Sherman joined Deebo Samuel on the injured reserve list last week. George Kittle was injured during the Week 1 game and ruled out of play on Friday. Dee Ford and Jason Verrett were also ruled out for Sunday’s game while Ahkello Witherspoon was placed in the concussion protocol.
Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 259 yards, two touchdowns, and a 103 rating last week and will be going for his fifth game in a row on the road with a 100+ rating. He is one of five quarterbacks with 10 or more games with a 100+ rating.
Raheem Mostert had 151 total scrimmage yards in Week 1 as well as a touchdown catch and is going for his eighth game in a row with a touchdown and Jerick McKinnon also recorded a touchdown last week.
On the other side of the ball, Nick Bosa posted his second career forced fumble last week, and D.J. Jones recorded his third career sack. Fred Warner posted 10 tackles and one pass deflection against the Cardinals last week. Jaquiski Tartt also put an interception on the records. Emmanuel Moseley posted a career-high 15 tackles last week and is going for his third career game with 10 or more tackles.
New York Jets
In Week 1 the Jets were defeated by the Buffalo Bills, 27-17, and quarterback Sam Darnold had a mediocre, at best. Darnold only completed 60 percent of his passes last week for 215 yards, one touchdown, and one interception for a 75.3 rating.
For the first time since he signed to the Jets in the offseason, former 49ers running back, Frank Gore will meet up against the team he spent most of his career with. Gore ranks third in NFL history with 15,371 career rushing yards and fourth with 19,267 career scrimmage yards.
The Jets will have to play without Jamison Crowder this week as he has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, so they will look to Breshad Perriman, who has posted five or more catches, greater than 110 receiving yards, and scored a receiving touchdown in the last two his three games versus the NFC.
Chris Herndon will also play a key factor in the Jets offensive line as he posted six catches for 37 yards last week and has 50 or more yards receiving yards in his last three of four home games.
The Jets’ defensive line was the stronger side of the ball in Week 1. Marcus Maye started this season by setting career-high records in tackles and sacks last week and also posted two pass deflections and a forced fumble.
Bradley McDougald posted six tackles, a fumble recovery, and a pass deflection in his debut with the Jets, and Brian Poole also recorded nine tackles, one sack, and a pass deflection against the Bills.

Point Spread: SF -7 (-110) | NYJ +7 (-110)
Moneyline: SF -330 | NYJ +255
Over/Under: O 41.5 (-110) | U 41.5 (-110)
The Jets are unlikely to meet this point spread and there is a probability the 49ers score more than the over/under on their own, so the over would be the best bet to place this week.
Prediction
Although both teams enter this week with the determination and vengeance to not go 0-2 to open the season, it will be the 49ers who prevail and beat the Jets. Even with so many key players injured on the San Francisco squad, the defense will keep the Jets from scoring more than two touchdowns.
Final Score: San Francisco 49ers 41, New York Jets 14
