Week 2 NFL Injury Update

Dr. Beth Sullivan | September 14th, 2019

Week One is in the books and unfortunately, the injury page in that book got several more entries. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Sterling Shepard WR New York Giants, Jordan Reed TE Washington Redskins & Tavon Austin WR Dallas Cowboys

Shepard, Reed, and Austin are all in the NFL concussion protocol and have all been ruled out for their respective games this week. I covered the specifics of this protocol in my previous article about concussions which is available here. The return from a concussion is controlled by the independent neurological consultant for each team. Since all three of these players remain in the protocol no other information is available regarding their time table for return.

Derrius Guice RB Washington Redskins

Guice suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee in his first NFL game week one. Guice missed his whole rookie season after suffering a torn left ACL in the preseason last year. He was placed on IR after undergoing surgery to clean up the meniscal tear Thursday. The normal recovery time for this type of procedure is about six weeks. He should be able to return to the field later in the year.

C.J. Mosley ILB New York Jets

Mosley left the Jets week one game against the Buffalo Bills with a groin strain. He did not practice all week and as of Saturday afternoon was officially ruled out of the Jets week two game against the Cleveland Browns. This is not surprising since a mild (Stage 1) groin strain takes two to three weeks for a full recovery. You can read more about sprains and strains here. Trying to rush him back before fully healed is just asking for trouble.

Cody Latimer WR New York Giants

Suffered a calf strain in practice on Thursday and did not participate on Friday. He was listed as questionable, but as I explained while talking about Mosley. A mild strain is a two to three-week injury for a full recovery. I don’t expect him to play on Sunday and if he does try to play he could be risking further injury.

Joe Mixon RB Cincinnati Bengals

Mixon suffered an ankle sprain and was a nonparticipant the first two days of the week but returned on Friday to participate in the team’s walkthrough. With a mild ankle sprain, the main concerns are swelling and pain. As long as he is able to play without significant discomfort or swelling in the ankle he should be able to play. How effective he will be remains to be seen. The Bengals run game really needs him, so hopefully, he will be able to contribute effectively.
