On Monday Night Football in Week 17, the Washington Football Team faced off with the Philadelphia Eagles in a game with serious playoff implications. With Carson Wentz expected by most to leave the Eagles this offseason, rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts took the field one last time this season to spoil Washington’s playoff hopes.
After several back-and-forth scores in the first half, Philadelphia sat Hurts in the second half and Washington walked away with a 20-14 playoff-clinching win. As a result, the New York Giants were also eliminated from the postseason.
First Half
Washington opened the game with a 15-play, 92-yard drive that ended in an Alex Smith touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin. On the ensuing possession, Hurts threw an errant pass into the hands of Washington cornerback Kamren Curl. The Football Team converted on the turnover, tacking on a field goal and taking a 10-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, Philadelphia responded with a Hurts rushing touchdown. After a punt from the visitors, Hurts scored with his legs once again, giving the Eagles a 14-10 lead. Two punts later, Washington drove the field with under two minutes remaining and Smith found tight end Logan Thomas for a 13-yard touchdown. Entering halftime, Washington led the Eagles 17-14.
Second Half
One of the more underwhelming halves of the season. The Eagles inexplicably elected to rest their future franchise quarterback. As a result, they went scoreless with Nate Sudfeld under center. Washington was able to kick a field goal early in the half to push their lead to 20-14. Several turnovers by both teams later, the Washington Football Team walked away with a victory.

It’s 1:08 in the morning and Carson Wentz, Zach Ertz & Jason Kelce just left the field after staying a long time outside in the rain talking. Have to wonder if they sense this could be the last time they are all together on the same team. pic.twitter.com/RM7zUa34H0

Washington ends the regular season with a record of 7-9 and will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wild Card Weekend. Philadelphia closes their season out 4-11-1 and will have the sixth pick in the upcoming draft, along with a great deal of questions for head coach Doug Pederson.
