The Washington Football Team traveled to Pittsburgh to take on the undefeated Steelers on Monday in Week 13. In a defensive battle, the game saw 13 punts and limited scoring opportunities. Regardless, Washington ultimately kicked the go-ahead field goal and sealed the victory 23-17 on an interception late in the fourth quarter.
Top performers for Washington included tight end Logan Thomas (nine catches, 98 yards and a touchdown), running back J.D. McKissic (10 catches, 70 yards), and linebacker Jon Bostic (game sealing interception). For the Steelers, wide receivers Diontae Johnson and James Washington combined for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
First Half
The first quarter saw six consecutive punts before the Steelers struck first. Ben Roethlisberger found Johnson for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Several possessions later, Roethlisberger connected with Washington for a 50-yard touchdown. All signs pointed to another blowout victory for Pittsburgh as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead.
Washington was able to put together a short drive that resulted in a field goal as time expired in the first half. They would head into halftime trailing 14-3.
Second Half
The Football Team opened the second half with a long, 14-play drive. Running back Peyton Barber plunged into the end zone from one yard out to cut the score to 14-10. Two possessions later, the Steelers kicked a field goal to lead by a touchdown. From there it was all Washington.
Alex Smith connected with tight end Thomas for the tying touchdown early in the fourth. After a Pittsburgh turnover on downs, the Football Team took their first lead of the game on a Dustin Hopkins field goal. The Steelers were given one last chance with two minutes left in the game. Roethlisberger’s pass was tipped by defensive end Montez Sweat and intercepted by Bostic. Washington would go on to win 23-17.

Pittsburgh drops to 11-1 and is now tied for first place in the AFC with the one-loss Kansas City Chiefs. They will need to win at least three of the next four weeks if they want a chance at the first round bye. Meanwhile, Washington’s huge upset improves them to 5-7. The New York Giants (5-7) have the tiebreaker over the Football Team, however, with four weeks remaining and the division remains up for grabs.
