Week 13 Preview: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Green Bay Packers

As Aaron Rodgers turns 37, he looks just as good now as he did while winning the first of two MVP awards in 2011. During that 15-1 season for Green Bay, Rodgers completed 68.3 percent of his passes, threw for 4,643 yards, and 45/6 touchdown to interception ratio. In 2020, nine years older, Rodgers on pace for 4,509 yards, 48 touchdowns, six interceptions, and currently has a quarterback rating of 117.6 which is second in his career behind the 2011 season.

Although Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the frontrunner for NFL MVP at the moment, Aaron Rodgers is making his own very strong case every time he steps on the field.

“When you’re out there and you see Aaron play, practice and you see him on the field, your jaw drops. Some of the things he can do, the plays he can get in, and the way he plays the game, in my opinion, he is always the MVP,” said Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Speaking of incredibly talented players, Packers wide receiver Davante Adams is also on pace for his best season ever. On pace for 17 touchdowns and 1,400 receiving yards, Eagles corner Darius Slay will have a difficult matchup on Sunday afternoon.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence in Davante no matter who is covering him,” said Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

For Philadelphia, their hope Sunday lies in the return of Zach Ertz and the running game that is powered by Miles Sanders. Both Sanders and Ertz have struggled with injuries all season, and those injuries have been a key reason that Carson Wentz has struggled so much. Either way, with both Ertz and Sanders in line to play Sunday, Green Bay will have to game plan for a much different offense.

“Ertz is definitely a guy that you have to be aware of at all times, no matter where he is on the field. As the security blanket for Carson, you have to keep track of him,” said LaFleur.

After allowing a huge run on the Bears’ first play from scrimmage last week, the Packers hope they can avoid a similar breakdown against Philadelphia this Sunday.

“We just have to be better as far as having awareness of our surroundings, and getting things right with communication and our alignments before the play,” said Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

Following a demoralizing loss at home against the Seattle Seahawks, the Eagles offense will have the eyes of the City of Brotherly Love on them at Lambeau Field. Wentz has had the worst year of his career, and many Eagles’ fans have called for second-round pick Jalen Hurts to be more involved in the offense. Even though the Eagles are still technically in the NFC East hunt, they will likely fall further behind after facing the 8-3 Packers this week.

Points Spread: PHI +8 (-110) | GB -8 (+110)

Moneyline: PHI (+315) | GB (+415)

Over/Under: O 48.5 (-110) | U 48.5 (-110)

Until the Packers do not hit the over in one of their 2020 games, pick the over. As long as Rodgers and Adams are healthy, pick the Moneyline against almost any team, but especially the Eagles. Playing the spread at 8.5 is always a risk, but a parlay of Packers Moneyline, over, and the GB spread could do well this Sunday. Green Bay averages 31.7 points per game, and that is while playing 6 of the top 11 defenses in the NFL. Take that into account when betting on GB moving forward.

Prediction:

There is little to suggest that after blowing out the Packers will struggle against the Eagles. Rodgers and Adams are on a roll, Robert Tonyan continues to emerge as a top tight end in the NFL, and the Packers defense is improving on their turnover hunting and making strides on their run defense. Until Wentz proves he can win in primetime against another top NFL quarterback, it should be another convincing win for the Packers. With around 300 fans in attendance, Green Bay seemed to regain their home field energy against Chicago, something that will sustain them with four of their last five games coming at Lambeau Field. Look for the Packers to win big again on Sunday.

Final Score: Philadelphia Eagles 17, Green Bay Packers 34
