The New York Giants took control of the NFC East with a 19-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
First Quarter
The Giants got the ball first starting at their own 24. After four plays getting New York to their own 43, Daniel Jones connected with Evan Engram on a 53-yard strike to the Cincinnati four-yard line. Wayne Gallman pounded the ball three times only to bring up a fourth-and-goal. The Giants went to Gallman one more time and he punched it in. Giants 7-0
On the ensuing kickoff, Brandon Wilson returned it 103 yards for a touchdown evening the score 7-7.
Second Quarter
The teams punted back and forth a few times. With the Giants looking like they may have something on the Bengals’ 33, Engram is stripped by Vonn Bell who recovered for Cincinnati. The great field position only helps so much as the Giants’ defense holds the Bengals to a field goal.
New York drives down the field to set up Graham Gano and his 49-yarder is good tying the game at 10 going into halftime.
Third Quarter
With Jones driving the Giants down the field and at the Bengals’ 19-yard line, he went down on a run and left the game with what looks like a hamstring injury. Colt McCoy took over and at least kept the Giants within field goal range for Gano to put it through for a 13-10 lead.
Niko Lalos intercepted Brandon Allen at the Cincinnati 40 to get the ball back for New York.
Fourth Quarter
McCoy got them in range again and Gano hit another field goal to push the lead to 16-10.
Another turnover by the Bengals recovered by Logan Ryan set the Giants up for yet another Gano field goal. 19-10 G-Men.
Finally, the Bengals and Allen have a nice drive culminating in a TD pass to Tee Higgins to pull Cincinnati to 19-17.
After the Giants are forced to punt leaving about a minute on the clock, the Bengals take over and promptly put the ball on the ground. Leonard Williams recovers the fumble after Allen is sacked by Jabaal Sheard and the game is over.
Highlights
Gallman and the Giants ran their scheme well today. Run the ball and cause turnovers. It was Williams’ fumble recovery that sealed the deal for the Giants and put them in first place in the NFC East. They will head west to face the Seattle Seahawks next week who will also be looking to take control of their division.
The Cincinnati Bengals fall to 2-8-1 and their playoff hopes are all but dead. They head to Miami to face the Dolphins who still have an AFC East title in mind.
