The New England Patriots are now 5-6 and very much in the AFC playoff conversation after a last-second field goal against the Arizona Cardinals.
First Quarter
Cam Newton‘s first pass of the game ended in an interception by Markus Golden which set the Cardinals up at the Patriots’ 23-yard line. After a 19-yard pass from Kyler Murray to Andy Isabella got them to the four, Kenyan Drake ran the ball twice. The second being a one-yard TD run to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.
After a New England punt, Arizona kicker Zane Gonzalez hit a 47-yard field goal to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 10-0.
Donte Moncrief returned the kickoff 53 yards to start New England in Arizona territory at their 46. A big 28-yard pass to Jakobi Meyers and a penalty on the play brought the Pats to the Cardinals 15.
Second Quarter
The Patriots started the second quarter at the Arizona eight. After a failed run, the Pats decide to go for it on fourth-and-two. James White took the next handoff for seven yards and a TD to pull the Pats down three.
Third Quarter
The Patriots forced the Cardinals to punt. When they took over, the Pats used a couple of Newton passes and a couple of Damien Harris runs to get them into field goal position. Nick Folk knocked a chip shot through and tied the game at 10.
Three plays into the Arizona drive and Murray got intercepted by Adrian Phillips at the 31-yard line giving the ball back to New England. The Patriots rode Harris and Newton again and gave the one-yard TD to White to take a 17-10 lead.
Fourth Quarter
Murray and the Cardinals took over at the end of the third and orchestrated a drive that lasted over seven minutes to tie the score at 17 with a Drake TD run.
Dre Kirkpatrick picked off Newton and got the Cardinals starting position at the New England 47. After getting the clock down past the two-minute warning, Gonzalez missed a 45-yard field goal and the game remained tied at 17.
With less than a minute left, Newton ran for 29 yards and got a penalty to tack on 15 more to bring the Pats to the Cardinals 39. Inching forward and eating clock, the Patriots left the game up to Folk’s leg. He didn’t disappoint and hit a 50-yarder for the victory 20-17.
Highlights
The Patriots head west to take on the Los Angeles Chargers next week. At 5-6, they can’t afford to drop any more games.
The Cardinals host the Los Angeles Rams in a must-win if they have any hope of a division crown.
