Week 12 Preview: Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets

The Miami Dolphins are 6-4 and a game behind the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC East. The New York Jets are 0-10 and…well…are the Jets. While the two teams are obviously heading in different directions, a divisional rivalry always brings out the best.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins got shut down last week against the Denver Broncos. Surprisingly they lost by only a touchdown after getting doubled up in yardage (459-223). Miami’s defense has been “bend don’t break” all season. They have allowed only 202 points this season, fourth-best in the NFL. But, they have allowed over 3,800 yards in total offense in just 10 games. The combo of Xavien Howard and Emmanuel Ogbah have been dynamic for the fish. Howard has six picks and 12 passes defended. Ogbah leads the team with eight sacks and has forced three fumbles.

On the offensive side, Salvon Ahmed is out Sunday. The running game will depend on Matt Breida and Patrick Laird as Myles Gaskin is still out as well. Tua Tagovailoa will be sitting this one out as he was downgraded to doubtful. Ryan Fitzpatrick will be starting at quarterback for the Dolphins against the Jets. The Dolphins don’t have a dynamic offense, but they can put up points. Miami averaged 30 points a game in the eight weeks between Week 2 and Week 10. Even with a depleted running game, the Dolphins should have a solid day on offense.

New York Jets

What is there to say? The Jets are a mess and will have the number one pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. They have allowed exactly 4,000 yards of offense this season. They have been outscored 302-149. Adam Gase’s team has played better the past two weeks dropping games against the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots by a combined nine points. Defensive players like Neville Hewitt and Marcus Maye continue to make plays while seemingly on the field forever. Another Jet who has been coming into his own, Quinnen Williams, likely won’t play today.

On offense, the Jets are led by Joe Flacco and Frank Gore. If this were 2016 with that combo, the Jets wouldn’t be 0-10. Unfortunately, it is what they have in 2020 and we know how this year has been. Denzel Mims has proven to be solid but is still looking for his first NFL TD. Breshad Perriman has also stepped up a bit. There really isn’t much more to say except the Tank for Trevor plan is working to a T.

This game on paper looks to be a blowout by the Dolphins after their 24-0 shutout of the Jets in Week 6. A home dog in a divisional game is always tough to bet against. Take the Jets and the 6.5 points. The under looks tempting as well, but stay away from it. The Jets have been scoring points and Fitzpatrick threw for three TDs the last time these two teams faced each other.
