Week 1 Recap: Houston Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Week 1 Recap: Houston Texans vs Kansas City Chiefs:Clyde Edwards-Helaire

In a highly anticipated rematch of the AFC Divisional Round in January, the reigning Super Bowl Champions, Kansas City Chiefs, dominated the Houston Texans winning 34-20 after revealing the Championship banner before the game.

Like the Divisional Round game, the Texans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead off a David Johnson rushing touchdown and would carry that lead into the second quarter.

Highlights

However, Mahomes and company would immediately respond and score the first seven of their 31 straight unanswered points with a touchdown pass from Mahomes to All-Pro tight end, Travis Kelce, tying the game at 7-7. Later in the second quarter, Mahomes would connect with Sammy Watkins for his second passing touchdown of the night, giving the Chiefs a 14-7 lead. The Chiefs would add on a field goal from kicker Harrison Butker before the end of the half, following an interception from rookie, L’Jarius Sneed, off of Deshaun Watson, taking a 17-7 lead into halftime.

The Chiefs would open up the second half with a 27-yard rushing touchdown from rookie running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, extending the Chiefs’ lead to 24-7. The Chiefs would add onto their lead in the fourth with Mahomes connecting with Tyreek Hill in the end zone for his third passing touchdown of the night, taking a 31-7 lead. However, Watson and the Texans would add two touchdown scores late in the game to cut the Chiefs lead to 31-20. To cap off the win, Butker would convert on his second field goal of the night, extending the Chiefs lead to 34-20. The Chiefs would go on and claim the first win of the 101st NFL season with a 34-20 victory over the Texans.

The star of the game was Edwards-Helaire, who rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut. Mahomes shined once again making highlight play after highlight play, throwing for 211 yards and three touchdowns. The Chiefs defense got constant pressure on Watson, recording 13 pressures and five sacks while intercepting a pass.

Watson ended the game with 253 passing yards, two touchdowns (one rush), and an interception. Will Fuller performed well with eight reception for 112 yards on the night.

The Chiefs dominated the Texans after the first quarter in the second consecutive matchup as Mahomes outplays Watson once again. Depending on the shakeup of the season, these two teams could meet again in the playoffs, but until then, the NFL will have to wait for another Mahomes verse Watson duel.

The Chiefs did see a few injuries throughout the game as Khalen Saunders suffered a dislocated elbow, Alex Okafor suffered a hamstring injury, and Charvarius Ward suffered a fractured hand. The timeline for all of these injuries is to be determined, but the Chiefs defense still played well without these three.

The Texans (0-1) will now shift their focus to their home opener against the Baltimore Ravens, while the Chiefs (1-0) will travel to Los Angeles for their first divisional battle against the Chargers.
