Events took a turn for the worst for Gordon Hayward in his opening game with the Boston Celtics.
At the 6:45 mark in the first quarter, Hayward went up high to receive a back-screen alley-oop from Kyrie Irving when he took contact from Cavalier center Tristan Thompson and landed awkwardly on his left leg. Based on the position of the leg alone, the fans and commentators knew this would likely be a season ending injury. Eventually, he was diagnosed with a fractured left ankle and an uncertain timetable until further testing.
Obviously, hearts are heavy league wide but especially so for Boston. After signing the All-Star to a max contract, Hayward will probably not step foot inside the TD Garden for a regular season game in his first season in green.
As of now, specifics are still unknown but Prime Time Sports Talk will be on the case and continue to provide updates throughout this colossal loss for the Celtics.
