USMNT Announces 23-Man Gold Cup Roster

Levon Satamian | June 6th, 2019

The United States Men’s National Team announces Gold Cup roster.

No surprise that USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter included rising phenom Christian Pulisic to the roster, but it was surprising that he left out Josh Sargeant.

It was a disappointing loss for the USMNT yesterday, losing to Jamaica 1-0. However, it was just a friendly. Christian Pulisic, Michael Bradley, and Jozy Altidore did not play in this match, and if they had played, the outcome of the game would have been much different.

The 23-man roster for the Gold Cup features:

Goalkeepers: Sean Johnson, Tyler Miller, and Zack Steffen.

Defenders: Tyler Adams, Omar Gonzalez, Nick Lima, Aaron Long, Daniel Lovitz, Matt Miazga, Tim Ream, and Walker Zimmerman.

Midfielders: Michael Bradley, Duane Holmes, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, Cristian Roldan, and Wil Trapp.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Paul Arriola, Tyler Boyd, Jonathon Lewis, Jordan Morris, and Gyasi Zardes.

As you can see, the veteran duo of Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore are back, along with Christian Pulisic. Omar Gonzalez and Matt Miazga should be the primary centre backs during the Gold Cup for the USMNT because they work well together. Will Trapp was brought on to serve in a role similar to Michael Bradley‘s but he failed to show that in the friendly against Jamaica. I expect a big tournament from Christian Pulisic. He should be able to dominate in Group D.

Group D features the United States, Guyana, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago. This should be a winnable group for the USMNT. The only team I see challenging this team in the Gold Cup will be Mexico. The first game will be on June 18th for the USMNT when they take on Guyana.
