UMass Falls to St. Bonaventure 98-78

UMass dropped its Atlantic 10 opener to St. Bonaventure by the final score of 98-78 on Thursday.

After climbing out of an early hole, UMass pulled trailed 28-27, with 5:19 remaining in the first half. However, the Bonnies would go on a 17-6 run, enhancing their lead to 45-33.

St. Bonaventure took a 47-38 lead into the break.

In the second half, the game began to slip away from the Minutemen as a 23-4 Bonnies run – capped by an Matt Mobley layup with 11:05 left – shot them up 72-48 and they never looked back.

Luwane Pipkins led UMass with 17 points and Malik Hines added 16.

The Minutemen return to play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host George Mason (6-8, 0-1).

More Money, More Problems.

I took a casual poll on whether or not college athletes should be paid or compensated when their respective university uses their image or likeness. The results were not as I expected. Out of about 100 people who responded, 72 of them said that college athletes should not be paid. This sample included people who had played and who were passionate about college athletics, people who were recently out of college and people who have been graduated for a long time. I personally voted that they should be compensated for their image being used for marketing or recruiting and in a way, they are with scholarships. But we all know that scholarships can only help so much.
