Tyler Herro: From Draft Question to Fan Favorite

Jacari McRae | July 28th, 2019

When the Miami Heat selected Tyler Herro 13th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, most Heat fans seemed either disappointed or confused with the pick. If you scrolled through Twitter shortly after the selection was made, you would see the disappointment in some fans. Most were expecting the Heat to draft either Kevin Porter Jr or Sekou Doumboya.

Fast forward to now, Tyler Herro has changed the minds of fans who doubted him. Herro also changed the minds of those following the NBA. And that’s all thanks to his impressive NBA Summer league performance. In six summer league games, he averaged 19.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.5 steals, making 17 three-pointers while shooting 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Everyone knows about his shooting ability. That’s no secret. But Tyler Herro also showed an ability to be a facilitator and set up for his teammates. In the clip above, you can see Herro set up his teammates through pick and roll sets. Herro likely won’t be the primary facilitator for the Heat, especially since Miami already have Goran Dragic, Dion Waiters, Jimmy Butler and Justise Winslow on the roster. But Herro’s versatility is a good sign.

Based on his summer league performance, Herro has been receiving heavy praise from retired players, including former Heat forward Caron Butler.

“Herro has got a sweet basketball game,” Butler told the Miami Herald. “He can score in so many ways. Going left or right, off the pick and roll, the catch and shoot. That’s what you call just an arsenal of ways to score the basketball. And he does not lack confidence whatsoever.”

It’s clear the Heat are very excited about the rookie guard’s potential. Before the Oklahoma City Thunder traded Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets, the Heat would not include Herro in any deal. Even the fans were clamoring for the Heat to not trade him to the Thunder. Now if a player like Bradley Beal becomes available, that could be a different story. But that’s a topic for another day.

Right now, Tyler Herro’s a Miami Heat player and fan favorite. If he continues to build off of his summer league performance, it’ll stay that way.
