Time for the New York Jets to Cut Ties with the System or the Roster?

The New York Jets have got themselves in a very crucial situation for the future of their franchise. They currently are 0-3 to start the season and have a date with the banged-up Denver Broncos tomorrow night.

There have been rumors about Adam Gase possibly being put on the hot seat due to his poor play since becoming the head coach.

Sam Darnold has struggled immensely, albeit the Jets having many injuries to their offense. They have been down Denzel Mims, Breshad Perriman, Jamison Crowder, Le’Veon Bell, Mekhi Becton, and several others.

Watching the film from Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts leaves many questions on the ability of the Jets to move forward and progress with the current coaching style. Darnold, 23, still has plenty of years ahead of him despite being in his third season. The Jets have failed to provide him with adequate weapons to ensure success at this level. Last season the Jets had a bottom of the league offensive line which was detrimental to Darnold’s development. For the 2020 season, the Jets added many new faces including Becton, George Fant, and Greg Van Roten. Despite this, the Jets have been rattled by injuries which have caused in part the cave-in that we all are witnessing.

Who Makes the Cut?

There are many ways to look at the current situation. The Jets can move on from Gase and hope that a new regime could help bring out the best in Darnold. Once the offseason hits, the Jets would be wise to look at Chiefs offensive coach Eric Bieniemy. Many consider him a star in the making. Bieniemy would bring experience with one of the most crafty offensive schemes in Kansas City, and bring many intriguing elements to the Jets offense. Another coaching option would be Houston Texans coach Tim Kelly who has worked with another great offense. Both options would help build around Darnold, which is what the Jets need to consider.

The other option the Jets have is to lose out the rest of the season. The Jets have many picks in the first two rounds of the draft and tanking would allow them to get a high pick and trade down for many extra picks. Thereby, being able to provide Darnold with even more pieces to work with, and truly find out if he is a starter in the NFL.

There is an outside chance that the Jets would decide that Darnold is not a starter in the league. Thereby, eyeing the first pick and targeting Clemson’s star quarterback Trevor Lawrence. This would undoubtedly set the Jets back several years and create many more holes on the offense. Darnold should not be given up on yet.

Overall the Jets have several issues on their hands and could choose many paths. At the moment, there isn’t a right or wrong path. The mess in East Rutherford is in need of cleaning and in need of it now.
