Three Possible Trades for the New York Giants

golden tate

If the 2021 NFL Draft took place today, the New York Giants would have the second overall pick. They hold a record of 1-6, with their lone win coming over their division rival Washington Football Team. Despite their 1-6 record, the Giants are only two games out of first place in the awful NFC East, which would earn them a playoff spot. However, the Giants have no shot at winning the division and should be sellers at next week’s trade deadline. Here are three possible trades the Giants should make.

Trade #1: Kevin Zeitler to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2021 fourth-round pick

Yes, the offensive line has been awful this season, so why would the Giants trade away one of their starters? Because Zeitler isn’t part of the team’s long term plans and the Giants should give fifth-round rookie Shane Lemieux some game experience. Zeitler’s name has been swirling around the trade rumors for a few weeks, and it seems very likely that the Giants move him before next week’s trade deadline.

Patrick Mahomes is the most valuable player in the NFL, not only for the Chiefs but the league itself. However, the Chiefs offensive line has struggled this season, especially at guard. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif opted out before the season started, then his replacement Kelechi Osemele tore ligaments in both his knees and is out for the season. For the cost of a late fourth-round pick, the Chiefs can solidify their offensive line with the addition of Zeitler.

Trade #2: Evan Engram and a 2021 sixth-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for a 2021 third-round pick

Throughout his career, Engram has dealt with injuries, but when he’s been on the field, he’s been productive. However, Engram has struggled this season with a limited role in the Giants’ passing attack. Furthermore, his struggles with drops, highlighted by the game-winning drop last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, may have worn out his welcome in New York. With a likely new general manager calling the shots in the offseason, Engram will likely be cut instead of paying him $6 million next season. The Giants need to add draft picks to help their rebuilding process, and Engram gives them the best chance to add a day two selection.

After starting the season 4-0, the Bills have lost two of their last three games and looked awful against the New York Jets last week. The defense has been banged-up, but the offense has fallen off a cliff. Over their first four games, the Bills averaged 30.8 points per game compared to only 17 over their last three games. Dawson Knox has struggled this season, and the Bills should look to upgrade the tight end spot. With defenses focused on Stefon Diggs and John Brown stretching the field, Engram would be able to win one-on-one in the middle of the field.

Trade #3: Golden Tate to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2021 fifth-round pick

While the Giants lack depth at wide receiver, Tate needs to be traded. He seems uninterested at times, and the Giants will likely let him go after the season to save $6 million in cap space. Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard are the only wide receivers on the roster who should be part of the team’s plans next season. With that in mind, the Giants should and will move Tate before the trade deadline for a day three pick.

The Colts have struggled on offense at times this season. Part of the problem is Philip Rivers, and the other part is the lack of healthy weapons. Rookie receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is on injured reserve. Meanwhile, slot receiver Parris Campbell is likely out for the year with a knee injury. Tate would provide a veteran in the locker room and give Rivers a slot receiver he can rely on. The Colts are only one game behind the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South, and if they have any chance at winning the division, they need to add a weapon on offense.
