Three NFL Teams with Holes at Cornerback

NFL

Three NFL teams with playoff expectations this season need a starting cornerback. The two best cornerbacks still available are Richard Sherman and Steven Nelson. Sherman is at the end of his career, but he would be a logical addition for any of the three teams that will be discussed. Sherman is still a good player and would help any of these defenses with his veteran experience. Nelson is a good corner still in his prime as a player. He would help any of these three secondaries as well.

Buffalo Bills

After the offseason, a starting cornerback opposite of Tre’Davious White is the only concern on the Bills defense. Levi Wallace has been a solid player the last few seasons. However, the Bills could still look to improve. Over the last two offseasons, the Bills have signed Kevin Johnson and Josh Norman to one-year contracts. In the offseason, the Bills did a great job addressing their front seven. Their secondary is already really strong with White outside and Taron Johnson in the slot. Also, they have arguably the best safety tandem in the NFL with Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. The Bills are heading into this season with Super Bowl expectations. Adding Sherman or Nelson would be a great move to help the Bills win it all.

Arizona Cardinals

This season, the Cardinals will be trying to take the next step and make the playoffs. At cornerback, they lost long-time great, Patrick Peterson in free agency. They have Byron Murphy, who is a good player and still young. In free agency, they signed Malcolm Butler. However, in the draft, they did not add a cornerback until the fourth round. They need a third starting cornerback heading into a pivotal season. Adding Sherman or Nelson would make sense for the Cardinals.

Chicago Bears

Head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace cannot afford a bad season. Their team has a big need at cornerback opposite of Jaylon Johnson. Early in the offseason, they had to release long-time starter, Kyle Fuller. In the draft, they did not add a cornerback until the sixth round. At this point, signing either Sherman or Nelson would certainly be ideal. Addressing this need is important as the Bears try to get back to the playoffs.

Conclusion

For Nelson, the Bills make the most sense. He would help improve a position of concern. Signing Nelson would have the Bills defense complete heading into this season as they pursue a Super Bowl. The Cardinals are a great fit for Sherman. It has been reported that Sherman prefers to stay on the west coast. The team signed older players like J.J. Watt and A.J. Green earlier in the offseason. Adding Sherman would improve a need. It would also be vital to add another veteran presence to help the team get to the next level.
