Three Landing Spots Cam Newton Should Avoid

Cam Newton

The New England Patriots released veteran quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, making Mac Jones the starter. While much of the conversation has been about how Jones compares to Tom Brady. Another ripple effect from this is Newton currently doesn’t have a job.

ESPN’s Mike Greenberg posted this tweet on Wednesday morning:

Three out of those four teams don’t really make sense for Newton. Usually, we will talk about some of the logical fits for the former MVP. This time, though, let’s clarify some of the teams that Newton shouldn’t be suiting up for.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys gave Dak Prescott the money he deserved in the offseason but he isn’t a guarantee to stay healthy the entire year after battling a shoulder strain earlier in training camp. Therefore, some thought Newton would be a nice luxury to have behind Prescott. The problem with that is Jerry Jones loves Cooper Rush.

The Cowboys owner said it’s a “high bar” for another quarterback to pass rush on the depth chart. Also, Newton isn’t the guy that seems like he would want to be a backup quarterback the entire season. The only way he’d likely be willing to sit on the bench is if he’s in a place that could change quarterbacks if things go south. The Cowboys aren’t benching Prescott. Plus, Dallas just signed Will Grier off waivers from the Carolina Panthers.

Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team looked like they’d be another fit for Newton. A big reason why is Ron Rivera coached him with Carolina. However, Rivera respectfully said that Washington isn’t interested in signing the 32-year-old. “[Newton being released] did pop up on our radar, but just so you know, Ryan Fitzpatrick is our starting quarterback,” Rivera said when he talked to the media recently. “So that’s where we are. We have three guys we like that all came to camp [who] did a nice job for us and we’re going to go forward with those guys.” That doesn’t sound like Newton is getting a phone call from his former coach anytime soon.

It’s also important to remember Newton isn’t vaccinated. Rivera, a cancer survivor, wasn’t happy about his players not being vaccinated earlier this year. “I have to be careful, I have to wear [masks],” Rivera told Breer. “We’ve had a couple of situations with players already testing positive for Covid, and that scares the hell out of me because I interact with these guys. I’m close to these guys, and sometimes I forget to put my mask on for extra insurance. I know I’m vaccinated, and I know it’s going to keep me from getting deathly ill, but I can still get it. And who knows? So I have to be careful.”

Houston Texans

You’d think the Texans would be somewhat interested in Newton’s services. They have to operate like Deshaun Watson won’t play for them again and Tyrod Taylor, who hasn’t started more than four games since 2017, is the team’s starting quarterback. Except there’s one big problem with the Texans being interested in Newton.

They aren’t actually trying to win. Caesars Sportsbook gives the Texans the worst odds in the NFL to win the Super Bowl. They traded DeAndre Hopkins, who was arguably the best wide receiver in the league. Brandin Cooks and Mark Ingram are their most notable players. If Newton was the quarterback, he’d give them a better chance to win over Davis Mills. But again, they aren’t trying to win so that would be counterproductive for them.
