The calendar moves to December and we have Duke, Michigan State, Kansas, and Kentucky all in action Tuesday night in the State Farm Champions Classic. We’ll get you ready for it after recapping the biggest games from Monday.
Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk, where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!
Yesterday’s Biggest Games
#17 Texas 78 vs. Davidson 76
Texas survived Davidson by two in the early game of the Maui Invitational. Davidson had two opportunities to make the go-ahead three-point shot, but missed both of them. Courtney Ramey made a reverse layup to give Texas the 78-76 lead with 16.1 seconds remaining in the second half.
The Longhorns’ two-point win improves them to 2-0 before a huge matchup against the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday. Davidson drops to 1-1 and will be in the consolation bracket for the remainder of the early-season tournament.
St. John’s 97 vs. Boston College 93
St. John’s got back Julian Champagnie off the bench in their first game at Mohegan Sun, but Posh Alexander was the star in the first half. He started the game 6-for-6 from the field with 14 points just 16 minutes into the first half in his third-career game as a Johnnie. St. John’s ended the first half on a 23-8 run and held a 12-point lead.
Champagnie took over in the second half, scoring 14 points and finished with a career-high 29 while shooting 11-for-20 from the field.
Boston College came back from a 20-point deficit as their sense of urgency increased in the closing minutes and they made it a two-point game with 47.1 seconds to go. Fouls got the Red Storm into some trouble, as three players fouled out including Vince Cole and Isaih Moore.
With 43 seconds remaining, the referees didn’t know how many timeouts were left for Boston College (there was one) which caused a lengthy delay and pretty much took away any momentum that the Eagles had.
St. John’s had a 96-93 lead and Champagnie came up with a huge block on a Boston College three-point attempt with seconds to go to essentially end it. The Red Storm improved to 3-0 with a matchup against BYU coming up on Wednesday from Mohegan Sun.
Stanford 82 vs. Alabama 64
Cardinal forward Ziaire Williams showed he was the real deal again on Monday night, putting up 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. Stanford outrebounded Alabama 51-34, and they cashed in on those extra scoring opportunities. The Crimson Tide wasn’t very successful from behind the arc, making just 23.3% of their attempted three-pointers (7-for-30).
Stanford will now play North Carolina later today after the Tar Heels beat UNLV yesterday.
Games to Watch Today
#8 Michigan State vs. #6 Duke
How to Watch: Tuesday, December 1, 7:30 PM ET, ESPN
In the first of two blockbuster matchups on Tuesday night, Tom Izzo and the Spartans travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium to face off against Coach K and the Blue Devils. Michigan State enters the contest 2-0 after big wins over Eastern Michigan and Notre Dame. Duke escaped Coppin State by ten points last weekend.
#20 Kentucky vs #7 Kansas
How to Watch: Tuesday, December 1, 9:30 PM ET, ESPN
Each team has a loss already one week into the season, but one was much worse than the other. Kentucky was upset on Sunday by unranked Richmond as their lack of experienced starters showed against the Spiders, who started four seniors. The Jayhawks, on the other hand, lost to the best team in the country but still managed to put up 90 points. If Bill Self‘s team can replicate that offensive performance tonight, they will get a win.
