Four top-11 teams were in action against each other on Wednesday, including top-ranked Gonzaga. We’ll walk you through Jalen Suggs‘ unfortunate injury and the biggest matchups coming up on Thursday.
Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!
Yesterday’s Biggest Games
#1 Gonzaga 87 vs. #11 West Virginia 82
The big story of this game was Suggs, for all the wrong reasons. The Zags’ star freshman had to be helped off the floor in the first half after slipping and hurting his left ankle. He couldn’t put any weight on his left foot initially and was grimacing in pain when he was sitting on the bench. Somehow, he was able to check back into the game early in the second half. Before the injury, Suggs had four points and four rebounds in ten minutes of play.
Drew Timme struggled mightily in the first half, as he was just 1-9 from the field in 17 minutes. He must have cleared his head at halftime because he was Gonzaga’s best player down the stretch. Timme scored 14 of his 17 total points in the second half on 6-for-8 shooting.
It’s scary for the rest of the country to see Gonzaga score 87 points on the 11th best team in the polls. Especially considering Suggs suffered the ankle injury and did not score in the second half.
#5 Illinois 69 vs. #2 Baylor 82
In what began as the best matchup of the night, Baylor pulled away late over the Fighting Illini. Davion Mitchell scored 15 points with 7 rebounds while Adam Flagler had a surprisingly good night as well, putting up 18 points.
Scott Drew was back for the first time this season after testing positive for COVID-19 and he made it back just in time for his team’s toughest week on their schedule. We have a great matchup coming on Saturday when #1 Gonzaga faces second-ranked Baylor.
UPSET ALERT: #17 Texas 69 vs. #14 North Carolina 67
It was a close one in the Maui Invitational Championship Game and Matt Coleman drained a clutch shot to give Texas the upset victory over Roy Williams. North Carolina is now 3-9 all-time vs the Longhorns–the worst record against another team they have played at least ten times.
Games to Watch Today
Western Illinois vs. #3 Iowa
How to Watch: Thursday, December 3, 8:00 PM ET, BTN
Luka Garza is the favorite for Player of the Year, and he has gotten off to a great start. In the Hawkeyes’ last game, Garza scored 36 points in the first half and finished with 41 in their rout of Southern University 103-76.
Iowa is obviously expected to win so if there’s just one reason to tune into this game… to watch Garza.
Washburn vs. #7 Kansas
How to Watch: Thursday, December 3, 8:00 PM ET, ESPN+
After a tough primetime matchup on ESPN facing John Calipari and Kentucky, Bill Self‘s team gets to have what some would call a bye game.
#25 Arizona State vs. California
How to Watch: Thursday, December 3, 10:00 PM ET, PACN
Before the Sun Devils face San Diego State, they will go up against the Golden Bears. Arizona State will have to win if they want to keep a number next to their name.
