The NCAA Basketball Daily Dunk

Duke had some trouble in their season opener and a top-five team was on upset alert in an eventful day of college basketball. Another group of ranked teams are in action on Sunday.

Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!

Yesterday’s Biggest Games

UPSET: Virginia Tech-81 vs #3 Villanova-73

After beating #18 Arizona State on Thanksgiving, Jay Wright and the Wildcats took the floor again to face Virginia Tech. Collin Gillespie carried Villanova during the first half, scoring 18 of his team’s 29 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl was not sharp from the field as he was just 5-14 in regulation, good enough for 12 points.

The Hokies never stopped fighting, as it was a one-possession game in the final minute of the contest. They had a two-point lead with 1.3 seconds left but were then was assessed a personal foul on an inbound pass which put Justin Moore at the free-throw line. He made both shots to force overtime.

Virginia Tech held a five-point advantage with about 33 seconds to go in overtime and it forced Villanova to foul and play the free throw game. That strategy didn’t work as the Hokies won by eight points.

Villanova was the second top-four team that was upset this week. The University of San Francisco upset #4 Virginia on Friday 61-60.

Coppin State-71 vs #9 Duke-81

In Duke’s season opener, they struggled to get things going at Cameron Indoor Stadium without fans. Duke had 22 turnovers–which won’t make Coach K happy–and was outscored by seven points in the second half. Freshman forward, Jalen Johnson, carried the Blue Devils to a ten-point win–putting up 19 points, 19 rebounds, and five assists. DJ Steward scored 24 points in his Duke debut.

Notre Dame-70 vs #13 Michigan State-80

Before Michigan State faces Duke in the State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday, they faced unranked Notre Dame and it wasn’t as close as the score might say. Tom Izzo’s team led by 24 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game and the Spartans continued to pour it on. They won by ten points to secure their second win of the season and they are now 2-0. They look ready to give Duke–a team that struggled in their season opener–a run for their money on Tuesday night.

Notre Dame (0-1) has the hardest schedule in the ACC, and before they have to go up against Virginia and Duke they will play #23 Ohio State and #10 Kentucky to finish off their non-conference schedule.
