The NCAA Basketball Daily Dunk: Saturday, December 19, 2020

The NCAA Basketball Daily Dunk

San Diego State was in action last night and was upset so we’ll catch you up on that, and there are nine ranked teams playing today, including Gonzaga and Iowa.

Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!

Yesterday’s Biggest Games

UPSET: BYU 72 vs. #18 San Diego State 62

The Aztecs were back on the court at Viejas Arena for the first time since their win over Pepperdine. Their week off didn’t help them, as they were losing by 13 with 10:30 left in the second half. However, Brian Dutcher’s squad had some fight in them, going on a 14-0 run to tie the game up with less than two minutes remaining.

BYU’s Brandon Averette made a clutch three-pointer to put the Cougars up four. SDSU got the ball back, but Jordan Schakel traveled which gave the ball back to BYU and essentially put the game out of reach.

The Aztecs may not have even had the chance to come back if it wasn’t for Matt Mitchell. The senior kept his team in the game, scoring a career-high 35 points. Mitchell was the only player on the Aztecs to score at least 10 points. SDSU plays St. Mary’s on Tuesday in their final game before Christmas.

Iowa State 65 vs. #8 West Virginia 70

The Mountaineers will play #4 Kansas next week, but they had to get through the Cyclones first. West Virginia was on upset alert, as they were losing as late as one minute to go in the game.

Taz Sherman gave the Mountaineers the 64-63 lead on a layup but their lead vanished after two successful free throws from Iowa State’s Rasir Bolton. It was 65-64 Iowa State when West Virginia’s Miles McBride was fouled and sent to the line where he made both free throws to give them the lead back at 66-65.

The Mountaineers made two more free throws to make it a three-point game. After Iowa State failed to score, Emmitt Matthews Jr. was fouled and made both free throws to make it 70-65 West Virginia and put the game to bed.

Games to Watch Today

#3 Iowa vs. #1 Gonzaga

How to Watch: Saturday, December 19, NOON ET, CBS

Gonzaga was expected to play their toughest opponent all season a couple of weeks back when they were scheduled to play #2 Baylor, but that game was postponed due to positive tests inside their program.

Now, they’ll play another top-three opponent that happens to be led by the favorite to win Player of the Year. Luka Garza is averaging 29.2 points per game along with nine rebounds and 1.2 assists.

#23 Louisville vs. #12 Wisconsin

How to Watch: Saturday, December 19, 12:00 PM ET, ESPN2

The Cardinals and Badgers will play at the same time as Gonzaga and Baylor and it will also be a game to keep an eye on. These two teams were supposed to play earlier this year but it was pushed back to today.

Wisconsin was upset by Marquette earlier this season so they will be hoping to prove they are still a threat in the Big Ten with a win over a ranked opponent.

#22 North Carolina vs. Kentucky

How to Watch: Saturday, December 19, 2:00 PM ET, CBS

Usually, this game would be one of the best games of the year, but both teams aren’t up to their usual standards in 2020, particularly Kentucky. The Wildcats are off to their worst start in decades at 1-4, so they are looking to get back on track with a victory over Roy Williams‘ squad.

Make sure to check back here tomorrow for a recap of today’s games and we’ll get you ready for tomorrow’s best matchups in college basketball!
