West Virginia proved they belong in the top ten and two Big East squads battled it out in an overtime thriller. It’s another day which means there are more games to preview!
Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!
Yesterday’s Biggest Games
#19 Richmond 71 vs. #11 West Virginia 87
West Virginia had control of this game almost the entire way, holding a 19-point lead at one point in the second half. Miles Mcbride scored 20 and Jarrett Culver grabbed 11 rebounds in addition to putting up ten points of his own.
It made it impossible for Richmond to make a comeback in the second half after they allowed 52 points and only scored 30 in the opening half. The Spiders fell to 4-1 after starting the season undefeated.
With this win, the Mountaineers improve to 6-1 and should find their way into the top ten in the new AP poll after losses from Illinois and Duke this past week.
Overtime: St. John’s 94 vs. Georgetown 97
The Johnnies had a two-point advantage with under a minute left, but Georgetown’s Jahvon Blair drained a step-back three-pointer to give them a 86-85 lead with about 34 seconds to go. St. John’s guard, Posh Alexander, was fouled and made a free throw to tie it at 86.
Hoyas guard, Donald Carey, then went down the court and made the go-ahead layup. Qudus Wahab came up with a huge block on Vince Cole (his eighth of the game) to ensure Georgetown kept their two-point lead with 0.9 seconds remaining. That lead would disappear, as Greg Williams Jr. made a layup after a perfect bounce pass from Alexander to force overtime.
Georgetown had a 94-93 lead with about nine seconds to go in the overtime period, so St. John’s had to foul. Dante Harris made both free throws to make it a three-point lead. Georgetown fouled Williams Jr. so he couldn’t tie it with a three-pointer. Wahab got his ninth block of the game after a missed free throw before the Johnnies fouled again with two seconds to go.
Harris then made it a three-point game with a pair of free throws. St. John’s didn’t have an opportunity to get a shot off so the Hoyas escaped with the 97-94 win.
These two teams will play each other again on Sunday in Queens at 6:30 PM ET.
Northern Illinois 53 vs. #3 Iowa 106
Iowa was expected to win in blowout fashion yesterday and they did just that. Northern Illinois was 0-4 going in and had no hope to stop Luka Garza on Sunday afternoon. Garza led his team in scoring yet again with 23 points in addition to leading his team with eight rebounds.
The Hawkeyes are one of the best shooting teams in the country, and they showed yesterday that they can spread the ball around. 12 different Iowa players scored and three players excluding Garza scored at least ten points.
Iowa will now get about a week off without a game before they play #1 Gonzaga next Saturday.
Games to Watch Today
#21 Rutgers vs. Maryland
How to Watch: Monday, December 14, 6:00 PM ET, BTN
This is a sneaky good game between a ranked Rutgers team and a 4-1 Maryland squad that has wins over Navy, Saint Peter’s, Old Dominion, and Mount St. Mary’s.
Marquette vs. #8 Creighton
How to Watch: Monday, December 14, 9:00 PM ET, FS1
This could be a trap game for Creighton. Marquette has lost some key guys such as Sam Hauser after he transferred a year ago, but they still shocked #4 Wisconsin (at the time) and can certainly do it again tonight.
