Trading Odell Beckham Jr. would be the worst possible decision the New York Giants could make this off-season.
Another off-season means more Odell Beckham Jr. trade rumors. Today’s NFL legal tampering period kickoff has led to more of these rumors Giants fans want so badly to stop reading.
Tim Kawakami of The Athletic reported today that “NFL People” told him a trade for Beckham is possible and that the San Francisco 49ers would be the front runners.
Other indicate that New York is not actively shopping the superstar receiver instead just listening to offers.
The truth likely lies in the middle of these two reports. However, no matter what the Giants cannot afford to trade their superstar wide receiver.
At age 26 Beckham is one of the most prominent faces of the NFL. He is a three-time pro bowler, former offensive rookie of the year and two-time second team all-pro.
Last off-season the Giants signed Beckham to a five-year extension worth up to 95 million dollars.
However, the trade rumors still haven’t been put to rest despite both the organization and Beckham stating there are no trade talks in the works.
For the Giants trading, Beckham makes little sense.
New York’s current depth chart is already limited at wide receiver. Outside of Beckham and Sterling Sheppard the Giants have little experience at the position. Behind the starting duo, New York has former first-rounder Corey Coleman and practice squad players.
Rather than trading Beckham New York should be looking to add to the position.
The Giants also cannot afford to continue to disgruntle a New York fan base already upset with the team.
Since their super bowl 46 victory over the New England Patriots in 2012, the team has only been to the playoffs once (2016). That year they only played one playoff game.
If the Giants were to trade Beckham they’d send a signal to the fan base they’re rebuilding.
Rebuilds don’t go over well in New York City. By trading away, a fan favorite who is loved by the worlds biggest market the fan base would be more than upset.
The Giants cannot afford to do this as there are already many Giants fans at their breaking point after the decision to allow Landon Collins to walk as a free agent to the rival Redskins.
Will the Giants trade OBJ? Hopefully, for their own sake, the answer is never.
