The FA Cup is Down to Four Teams

FA Cup

What began with 124 competitors is now down to just four. The annual tournament of English soccer and the world’s oldest soccer competition will crown its next champions in May. For this season’s tournament, the Emirates FA Cup has seen more than its fair share of upsets and shocking results. The FA Cup is down to Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

Defending champions Leicester City were eliminated in the fourth round by Nottingham Forest. Manchester United was also eliminated in the fourth round. Arsenal, the 14-time FA Cup champions were eliminated in the third round. Furthermore, Tottenham crashed out in the fifth round. Throughout history, many top Premier League teams have crashed out of the tournament courtesy of a loss to a small club.

The Latest

Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough were this year’s dark horses. In Nottingham Forest’s case, dumping Arsenal and Leicester City is huge. It takes a lot to be able to eliminate the defending champions, as well as the club with the most titles in the tournament’s history. Middlesbrough, on the other hand, eliminated both Manchester United and Tottenham. Although Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest are both out now, there’s no doubt that their run was quite impressive.

On April 16, Chelsea takes on Crystal Palace and Manchester City squares off against Liverpool. It’s really interesting to see Liverpool and Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals, considering Liverpool is chasing Man City for the Premier League title. Chelsea is last year’s runners-up in the FA Cup and is hoping to avenge their loss. In addition, Chelsea is looking to avenge their loss to Liverpool in the English Football League final in February. Therefore, in Chelsea’s case, the best way to avenge their EFL Cup final loss is to win the FA Cup. Furthermore, if Chelsea were to beat Liverpool to win the FA Cup, it would make the accomplishment much more memorable.

Liverpool is looking to win the FA Cup for the first time since 2006. The Reds already won their first EFL cup since 2012 and they’re eager to win more titles this season. Liverpool remains in contention in the Champions League as well as the Premier League. The more silverware they win this season, the better. Manchester City’s last FA Cup title win was in 2019. Much like Liverpool, The Citizens want to add to their trophy case. While there’s nothing more important to Manchester City than the Champions League title, winning the FA Cup is a respectable accomplishment.
