Thank you, Next. Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT Breeze Past France to Move on to the World Cup Semifinals

Michaela Smalley | June 29th, 2019

The game was physical and the crowd was wild. With 45,595 fans present at Parc des Princes, the U.S. Women’s National Team shattered France’s World Cup dreams with a 2-1 quarterfinals victory.

United States soccer star Megan Rapinoe scored both of the United States’ goals, which were her 4th and 5th goals of the tournament. Though France was able to sneak in a goal by defender Wendie Renard off of a free kick, they were unable to break down the effective defensive efforts of the defending world champs.

The United States will have three days to rest and prepare to take on England in the semifinals where they will enter the match as a heavy favorite. Moving on to this match alone has made the USNWT a favorite to win the entire World Cup tournament as many people claim that the toughest team to beat is already behind them (France). However, as the competition levels continue to rise it will be important for the United States to focus on fundamentals and doing what the U.S. does best: staying true to the game plan and performing under pressure.

This matchup will undoubtedly be a fun one to watch as both teams are coming off of momentous victories and will both look to control the pace of play. This match will kick off next Tuesday at Parc Olympique Lyonnais at 3 pm Eastern Time.
