The Indianapolis Colts faced the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.
Coming off a dominating performance in Week 1 in Cleveland, Sunday’s home opener for the Titans had everything in their favor heading into the game.
The start of the game was delayed a few minutes due to a pyrotechnics mishap. The Titans got the ball first and went three-and-out. Jacoby Brissett then drove his team downfield. With the help of a questionable pass interference call, the Colts put a touchdown on the scoreboard. The Titans tied the game at seven after a drive culminated in a pass from Marcus Mariota to David Quessenberry for a touchdown. Jacoby Brissett methodically marched his team down the field again for a touchdown, but veteran kicker Adam Vinatieri missed the extra point. The Colts went into halftime with a 13-7 lead and would get the ball to start the second half.
Titans legends Eddie George and the late Steve McNair had their numbers retired in a halftime ceremony.
The second half started with the Titans’ defense forcing a three-and-out. Mariota put together a solid drive ending with Henry scoring from a yard out, giving the Titans a 14-13 lead. Both defenses played disciplined for the remainder of the third quarter. A 49-yard field goal by Titans kicker Cairo Santos accounted for the only other points scored in the frame, giving the Titans a 17-13 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. The Titans’ defense didn’t stand up as well as they did last week. Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Brissett, giving his team a 19-17 lead after Vinatieri missed yet another extra point.
After not getting a first down, the Titans punted the ball back to the Colts with under three minutes left. The defense stood tall, setting up a fourth down with just over two minutes on the clock. The Colts lined up to go for it and keep the clock kept moving. After calling a time out, Colts coach Frank Reich sent his offense back out. Brissett ran a sneak and looked to get a generous spot. Titans coach Mike Vrabel called a timeout and had the red challenge flag in his hand, but he never threw it. After stopping the Colts and burning their timeouts, the Titans got the ball back. Mariota was set up nicely for a fourth-quarter comeback in from of the Nissan Stadium faithful, and it was working. But after coming up short on second down, Mariota spiked the ball to stop the clock. The Titans failed to reach the first-down marker on fourth down, ending the game and a chance for a game-winning field goal.
The Titans, Colts, and Texans all sit at 1-1 in the AFC South. The Titans can’t dwell on this loss for too long. They play their division rival Jaguars in Jacksonville on Thursday night to kick off Week 3.
