Tennessee Titans vs. Carolina Panthers: Week 9 Preview

The Tennessee Titans travel to Carolina in Week 9 to take on the Panthers. The Panthers are coming in after a blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Titans are 2-0 since Ryan Tannehill took over for a benched Marcus Mariota, but the record is more of a credit to the Titans’ defense which followed up a goal-line stand against the Chargers in Week 7 with four takeaways against the Buccaneers last week.

The Panthers followed up their blowout victory in London against the Buccaneers by getting blown out by the 49ers, with a bye week wedged in between.

Tannehill has passed for 649 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in two-and-a-half games.

Kyle Allen has passed for 1,059 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions in five games while filling in for Cam Newton.

Titans running back Derrick Henry leads the team with 581 yards rushing and five touchdowns, plus another score receiving. He will look to gash the Panthers’ defense for large chunks of yardage.

Carolina’s premier running back, Christian McCaffrey, leads the team with 735 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. He also had 343 receiving yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns.

Titans rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown has been a breakout player the first half of the season with 348 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

On the other side of the field, D.J. Moore leads the Panthers with 463 receiving yards.

The Titans’ defense is a very opportunistic group. Second-year linebacker Harold Landry leads the team with five sacks. Their secondary is led by safety Kevin Byard and cornerback Logan Ryan who each have three interceptions on the year.

The Panthers defensively are led by linebacker Luke Kuechly who has 72 tackles and a pair of interceptions on the season. Cornerback James Bradberry leads Carolina with three interceptions.

The Titans will welcome back kicker Ryan Succop this week. He spent the first half of the season on the injured reserve. Cody Parkey has not missed a crucial kick since joining the Titans since Cairo Santos was released after missing four field goals a few weeks back.

Prediction

The game will come down to which defense stops the opposing running back. The Titans’ defense will study the 49ers’ game film and successfully limit Christian McCaffrey. Meanwhile, the Panthers won’t be as successful at stopping Derrick Henry, who will eclipse the 100-yard mark easily.

The Titans’ defense will cause pressure on Kyle Allen and cause him to make mistakes, similar to how they forced Jameis Winston to make mistakes, which in turn will give Ryan Tannehill and the Titans’ offense short fields to score touchdowns.

Final Score: Titans 31, Panthers 17
