Tennessee Titans vs. Carolina Panthers: Week 9 Preview

On Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, the Tennessee Titans will travel to Charlotte, N.C., to face the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. The Titans lead the all-time series 4-2 and have won the last three of four games between the two teams. The Titans come into the game 4-4 after a win over Tampa Bay last week, while the 4-3 Panthers are reeling from their huge loss to the 49ers last week.

Tennessee has averaged 299 offensive yards and 335.6 defensive yards up until this point, and Ryan Tannehill has completed 57 out 78 completed passes for 649 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions and a rating of 108.3 on the season. Derrick Henry had 151 carries for 581 yards and five touchdowns. Rookie A.J. Brown leads the team with 22 receptions for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Harold Landry has the most sacks with five, and Kevin Byard and Logan Ryan both have three interceptions on the record.

Tannehill passed for 193 yards and three touchdowns for a 109.8 rating in Week 8. He is going for his third game in a row with two or more touchdown passes and a 100-plus rating. In his only career start against Carolina as a Miami Dolphin in 2013, Tannehill posted 210 passing yards and a passing touchdown.

Henry has recorded four rushing scores and one receiving touchdown in his last five games on the road and is one of three players with 1,500 or more rushing yards and 15 or more rushing touchdowns since 2018, with opponent Christian McCaffrey being one of the other two players.

Tight end Jonnu Smith led the Titans last week with six catches and 78 receiving yards plus a touchdown last week, and he’s aiming for his third game in a row with more than 60 receiving yards.

Brown put a touchdown on the board last week and is tied for second place among AFC rookie wide receivers with three touchdown catches this season.

Adam Humphries posted 80 yards receiving last week and two touchdown catches in his last game at Carolina in 2018 as a Buccaneer. He is looking for his third game in a row against the Panthers with seven or more catches for 60 or more yards and a receiving touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, cornerback Logan Ryan posted eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, an interception and two pass deflections last week. Ryan is the first player with three interceptions and three forced fumbles in his team’s first eight games of a season in the last five years. Safety Kevin Byard has recorded three interceptions in his last five games on the road, and since 2017, Byard leads the NFL with 15 interceptions.  Linebacker Harold Landry had a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery last week against Tampa Bay. He has six sacks and two forced fumbles in six career games vs. NFC opponents. Linebacker Rashaan Evans is going for his fourth game in a row with ten or more tackles, and defensive tackle Jurell Casey had two tackles for loss and a sack last week and is going for his third game in a row versus the NFC with at least one sack.

The Carolina Panthers return home after getting stomped by an undefeated San Francisco in Week 8, 51-13. Carolina’s quarterback Kyle Allen has completed 99 of 159 passes for 1,059 yards, seven touchdowns, three interceptions, and an 88.5 rating on the season. Christian McCaffrey has posted an impressive 141 carries for 735 yards and eight touchdowns. D.J. Moore leads the team in receiving with 28 receptions for 463 yards and one touchdown, while Mario Addison leads his team with 6.5 sacks this year and James Bradberry with three interceptions. Rookie kicker Joey Slye has missed one PAT, connected on 17 of 18 while hitting 14 of 19 field goals.

Kyle Allen has been the starting quarterback since early in the season when Cam Newton suffered an injury. He is 2-0 with a touchdown pass and a 87.6 rating against an AFC opponent this year and has recorded at least an 80 rating in five of his six career starts.

Running back Christian McCaffrey is having a great season thus far, recording 155 scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown last week against the 49ers; and those were lower than average stats for him. McCaffery has posted six rushing touchdown and two receiving touchdowns in the past five weeks and is looking to make it six in a row with a rushing touchdown. He is also going for his third game in a row versus the AFC South with 175 or more scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown. Since 2000, McCaffrey is one of two running backs with at least 4,000 scrimmage yards and 30 touchdowns. (Todd Gurley is the other.)

Wide receiver D.J. Moore is going for his fourth game in a row with five or more receptions and has recorded 22 receptions for 256 yards in the three home games this season.

Tight end Greg Olsen recorded eight catches for 80 yards in the last meeting and has six or more receptions in addition to 70 or more receiving yards in the last two of three games at home.

Luke Kuechly led the defense during last week’s game in San Francisco with 10 tackles and an interception and is going for his third game in a row with an interception.  Kuechly leads all linebacker in tackles, interceptions and pass deflections, and posted eight tackles and a forced fumble in the last meeting. Bruce Irvin had his ninth career game with two sacks in Week 8, while defensive end Mario Addison has six sacks in the last five games. Rookie Brian Burns is going for his third game in a row at home in which he has recorded at least one sack. He is tied for third among rookies with 4.5 sacks on the season. Safety Eric Reid had eight tackles, including a career-high three tackles for loss, and his fourth career sack last week. Reid is going for his sixth game in a row with six or more tackles.

The game kicks off at 1:00 p.m. EST on CBS with Carolina slightly favored to win with a 51.1% win probability.
