Tennessee Titans True or False: June Edition

Here is the follow up to the Tennessee Titans True or False: May Edition article. Some of the same questions will be reassessed and new ones will be addressed.

The Titans and Derrick Henry will get a long-term deal done

True. The goal for both sides is for the reigning NFL Rushing Title holder to be the Titans’ running back long term. Specifically through his prime.

Henry virtually carried the team on his back for most of the season. Even more so the last three or four regular-season games, through their miraculous postseason run. Although the team ultimately came up short in the AFC Championship Game against the Chiefs, if you ask defenses that went up against Henry stopping him is easier said than done. Ravens safety Earl Thomas is a prime example. Leading up to the Ravens-Titans Divisional Round game Thomas and company said along the lines that Henry wouldn’t run seemingly at will as he has the previous handful of games. And Thomas, the defense, and everyone watching saw how that turned out.

A deal should be done prior to the July 15th deadline. The terms will likely be closer to the top of the players at his position, and may very well set the bar.

Either way the workhorse back that is Derrick Henry deserves every penny.

They are still in the Clowney Sweepstakes

True. Until a decision is made by the highly touted defensive free agent Jadeveon Clowney, this remains true. The Titans are by all indications, one of the few still trying to woo the linebacker. The latest reports have the Browns making a last-ditch push as well. The Jets are another team still on his short list. Rumors out of New York also indicated the Giants could also have made a quiet, but serious, inquiry. And in the last few days, the Saints have been rumored to have entered the sweepstakes.

Picking up Jackson’s option was a questionable move

False. Of all the cornerbacks on this team, Adoree’ Jackson still has the most upside. While last season he was prone to give up the big play, he’s also done an exceptional job and made crucial key plays at times also. He will reap the benefits of not having to contend with DeAndre Hopkins twice a season anymore.

Add that to the fact that Jackson isn’t the only DB in the league to get burned by the Chiefs receivers or the previously mentioned Hopkins.

Jackson is now the team’s number one corner on their depth chart, he may have a season where he will be in the conversation among the NFL’s shutdown corners.

They will be the AFC South Champions

True. This one is still true. The other trio of teams in this division has to depend on new and different parts. The Titans have the same nucleus in place. They’ve improved slightly in the pass rush, with the addition of former Falcons linebacker Vic Beasley, which was a glaring hole as the season wore on.

In addition to Jonnu Smith, who was May’s pick as the under-the-radar hero, there will be another surprise hero

True. After leaning towards second-year defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons, who will continue to quiet his skeptics who were critical of his draft position. The bigger surprise, who has had his fair share of naysayers as well, will be the aforementioned Adoree’ Jackson. He will have a breakout season in the Titans’ secondary. He will take his chances to make plays, which he can do since he had a stud safety in Kevin Byard behind him.
