Tennessee Titans True or False: July Edition

It’s time for the next monthly installment of the Tennessee Titans True or False series. While some of the questions from previous installments will be reassessed and new ones will be addressed.

The Titans and Derrick Henry will get a long term deal done.

True. Rumblings out of Nashville are still that both sides continue to work towards a long term deal. Henry wants to stay in Tennessee and the team also wants that. Hopefully, they hash it out quickly, as the July 15th deadline is rapidly approaching. After investing in quarterback Ryan Tannehill with a long term deal, locking up the reigning NFL rushing title winner long-term is all but a must for the Titans. Come next month’s edition, this question will have been solved one way or another.

The Titans are still in the Jadeveon Clowney Sweepstakes.

True. While things have been quiet out of Clowney’s camp, for the most part, the Titans are one of the teams that are believed to be still in play. The Browns, Giants, Cowboys, Saints along with the Titans are the most rumored destinations, for the highest touted free agent still unsigned. With training camps beginning soon, the Titans may decide to pull themselves out of the conversation on Clowney altogether and focus on the roster in place.

Taylor Lewan is still a top tier left tackle.

True. After missing the first four games last season due to suspension, Lewan took a few weeks to get acclimated back to his position. The high level that he has proven he can be and played a large part in the success of Tannehill, Henry, and the offense. He has heard the murmurs about him being done or a fraction of his Pro Bowl form. Many expected him to come out with a chip on his shoulder week five and that didn’t happen, and even his biggest supporters were beginning to turn on him. So expect lights out play from Lewan out of that gate and through the season.

Rookie Cole McDonald will win the backup quarterback job.

True. Titans’ practice squad and former AAFL quarterback Logan Woodside is penciled in as the backup to Tannehill. However, McDonald, the 2020 seventh-round pick out of Hawaii, will likely impress the coaches and earn the backup job.

In addition to Jonnu Smith and Adoree’ Jackson, who were previous picks as the under the radar heroes, there will be another surprise hero.

True. Rashaan Evans, who’s entering his third season after being selected 22nd overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Alabama, started all 16 games for the Titans last season. He tallied 111 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He proved he can be an effective run stopper at the line of scrimmage and in the open field. This season he will continue to do just that, but he still also gets to opposing quarterbacks more, as offenses will concentrate their efforts on slowing down Harold Landry, Jeffery Simmons, and former Falcon Vic Beasley. Evans will more often than not, be the “free man” for this defense’s front seven.
