Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Kwon Alexander set to Test Free Agent Market

The Bucs pro bowl linebacker is set to hit the open market on March 13th.

At today’s NFL combine’s media session Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht told the media that linebacker Kwon Alexander will indeed become a free agent when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13th.

Despite allowing Alexander to hit the open market, Licht made it clear he hopes to retain the former pro bowler for 2019 and beyond.

Licht called Alexander the “heartbeat of the Bucs defense. In addition Licht added he hoped the two sides could “get something done.”

Losing Alexander would be a tremendous loss for a Bucs team who needs all the defensive help they can get.

The Bucs drafted Alexander out of LSU in 2015. Since then he’s recorded 380 carer combined tackles, forced six fumbles, and gotten to the quarterback for seven sacks.

In 2017 Alexander was named to his first pro bowl after a season that saw him make 97 combined tackles despite playing just 12 games.

This past season Alexander suffered a season-ending injury after only six games. Before going down the Bucs were 3-3 and had a chance to reach the postseason. Without him, the Bucs finished the season 2-11.

Allowing Alexander to walk would be a critical loss as the Bucs have little depth on the defensive side of the ball.

Alexander will be just 25 years old when the 2019 season kicks off. Losing a player of his caliber entering the prime of his carer would be a tough pill to swallow.

Time will tell exactly what happens, but one thing is known. Kwon Alexander will be a free agent in a matter of weeks.
